BLACK PANTHER Retains Its Crown For The 5th Weekend In A Row; Tops CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Worldwide
For the fifth weekend in a row, Marvel's Black Panther is the number one movie in the United States and has topped Captain America: Civil War worldwide! Meanwhile, Tomb Raider is the #1 movie in the world!
Marvel's Black Panther continues to dominate the domestic box office and with an estimated $27 million this weekend, the Ryan Coogler-directed blockbuster has won its fifth consecutive domestic box office crown - the first film since 2009's Avatar to accomplish this impressive feat.
At the time of this posting, Black Panther has earned well over $1.18 billion worldwide ($605.4M domestic; $577.1M foreign) and recently topped the worldwide haul of Captain America: Civil War ($1.15M). It is now the fourth-highest grossing film in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe and the second-fastest film to break the $600 million domestic mark behind Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The Chadwick Boseman-starrer is on track to top the domestic total of Marvel's The Avengers ($623.3M) by the end of this coming week, if not sooner, and possibly the worldwide total of Marvel's Iron Man 3 ($1.214B) by the end of the month. However, while the film continues to set records, one number it's unlikely to top is The Avengers' massive $1.518 billion worldwide collection as experts are estimating a possible $1.3 billion finish, which would still be more than good enough to become one of the top ten highest-grossing films of all-time.
On a related note, after a solid debut in China last weekend, Black Panther saw a pretty hefty 81% drop in its second weekend and while it's managed to collect $96 million so far, T'Challa's reign in the Middle Kingdom seems to be over, for the most part.
As for this weekend's big release, Warner Bros. and MGM's Tomb Raider, which starred Academy Award-winner Alicia Vikander in the title role, opened in second place with a relatively disappointing $23.5 million in the States. However, the Roar Uthaug-directed action film did fare considerably better overseas with over $102.5 million from 65 international markets (including a huge $41.1M from China), making it the #1 movie in the world and bringing its current worldwide cume to just over $126.5 million. Considering the film's $90M budget, that should be a pretty solid start as the Easter holiday approaches.
