Black Panther II is moving forward without Chadwick Boseman, and Lupita Nyong'o has commented on continuing without the actor while teasing Ryan Coogler's "really, really exciting" ideas for the sequel.

Marvel Studios is moving forward with Black Panther II following the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, and the hope is that the sequel can pay homage to both his and T'Challa's incredible legacy.

What shape that will take remains to be seen, but we do know a new hero is set to take over the Black Panther mantle. There are conflicting reports and opinions about who that should be, but in a recent Good Morning America interview, Nakia actress Lupita Nyong'o was asked what fans can expect from the sequel.

"You know, in true Marvel form, I have nothing to tell you. It’s gonna be a hard one. It’s gonna be different, of course, without our king, to go back into that world. But I know that all of us are dedicated to reimagining or carrying on his legacy in this new Black Panther, and Ryan Coogler has some really, really exciting ideas that I look forward to bringing to life with the rest of the family."

In 2018's Black Panther, Nakia was clearly being set up as T'Challa's love interest, so the character's death is likely to have hit her hard. Of course, she's also a member of the War Dogs and a warrior in her own right, so it will be interesting to see what Nakia brings to the table in this movie.

Check out Nyong'o's comments in full in the video below:

Click the "Next" button below to see the
characters we think could appear in Black Panther II!

10. Monica Lynne

Monica

Nakia wasn't the most interesting of love interests for T'Challa in the first Black Panther movie, so if Marvel Studios is looking to move on from her (don't worry, we have some other ideas for how the character could be used), then Monica Lynne would be a great choice to fill that particular void.

In the comic books, Monica Lynne is a singer who saves the hero from drowning after he's defeated by Erik Killmonger. She ultimately became his long-term love interest, and was involved in many of T'Challa's adventures. If he doesn't factor into the sequel, though, there are other ways Monica could be used. For example, why can't she be a love interest for Shuri here instead?

That would be a groundbreaking move for Marvel Studios, and one which brings even more diversity to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the possible new face of the Black Panther franchise.

9. S'Yan

SYan

S'Yan is T'Challa's uncle and T'Chaka's brother. N'Jobu was portrayed as the King of Wakanda's brother in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, of course, but there's no reason there can't be another sibling!

In the comic books, S'Yan inherited the title of King and Black Panther until his nephew T'Challa was ready for the throne, and remained at his side as a counsellor in the years that followed. There are definitely ways the character could be used in this sequel, and he's someone with a limited enough history that Marvel Studios probably wouldn't struggle to completely reinvent him.

We'd love to continue exploring the history of the Black Panther mantle, though, so if there's a way that could be incorporated into the sequel via S'Yan, it could be a game-changer for the franchise.

8. Namor The Sub-Mariner

Namor1

Avengers: Endgame included an Easter Egg which definitely appeared to point to Atlantis factoring into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and possibly Black Panther 2. That sequel would be the perfect place to introduce Namor the Sub-Mariner, especially given the complicated history the two kings share.

They clashed on a number of occasions over the years, and while it's hard to say what could lead to a clash between Wakanda and Atlantis, it could prove to be something as simple as whoever holds the Black Panther mantle deciding to investigate what the undersea earthquake was Okoye initially dismissed.

Namor's big screen debut is long overdue at this stage, and this could be the perfect place to bring him into this shared world and make the anti-hero a huge part of future stories that unfold there.

7. Malice

Malice

Malice was initially introduced as one of Killmonger's mutated allies during his vie for the throne of Wakanda. The time has now passed for that in some respects, but taking Nakia down a villainous route (especially if she's mourning the death of T'Challa) could be an interesting, unexpected twist.

Her comic book history is somewhat convoluted, but there's plenty of potential there to use Nakia in a different light. She's died and been resurrected - that played a big role in why she headed down such a dark route - but there are a lot of fun ways her villainous transformation could be handled.

After initially appearing to be one of T'Challa's closest allies, the sequel could reveal that she was corrupted somewhere along the way and actually played a role in his death. That would make Shuri's battle with her personal, and give Lupita Nyong'o a much more interesting role in this follow-up.

6. Achebe

SHuri

Achebe is one of Black Panther's weirder villains, but someone who could definitely stand to be reinvented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While his real identity is unknown, it's thought he may have once been a farmer whose family was killed when their home was attacked.

In order to get his revenge, he made a deal with Mephisto, and it's this which led to him clashing with T'Challa. Achebe's home borders Wakanda, and he ultimately incites a war to punish those who he believes wronged him. Ultimately, the villain even manages to infiltrate the Wakandan government, and all of this could lend itself well to a movie that delves into the country's politics.

Just like Erik Killmonger made T'Challa look at his world in a different way, so too could Achebe, and there are countless ways the villain could be reinvented and reimagined for the MCU.

5. Spider-Man

Spiderman

When Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures agreed to a new deal which would keep Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (for now), it was for Spider-Man 3 and a future appearance in one of the Disney-owned movies. There are plenty of possibilities for that, but why not make it Black Panther 2?

While the wall-crawler may not initially seem like a natural fit for this sequel, fans have been desperate for a while now to see Peter Parker and Shuri match wits given their similarity in age and intelligence.

It doesn't seem overly likely that Peter will make his way to Wakanda, but if Shuri finds herself visiting the U.S. again, there are any number of ways the two heroes could cross paths. Of course, there is one good reason for why Spidey might head to the Black Panther's home, but we'll get to that...

4. Storm

Storm

If there's one thing most fans don't seem particularly keen on seeing explored in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's the romance between T'Challa and Storm. It was never received really received that well in the comic books, and the end of their marriage actually came as a relief for the most part.

However, with mutants now set to join this shared world, there's absolutely no reason a young Storm couldn't show up in Wakanda. Tying her to that fictional nation actually makes a lot of sense, and Black Panther 2 could serve as an origin story of sorts for Ororo Munroe before she finds her way into a future X-Men movie (seeing her team-up with Shuri would be a blast too).

Storm is a character whose potential was never really explored by Fox, so Marvel Studios taking an in-depth approach to her story before that eventual team-up would be no a bad thing.

3. Erik Killmonger

Killmonger

Erik Killmonger's death in Black Panther appeared to be as definitive as they come, but there have been rumours for a while now that Michael B. Jordan is actually set to somehow reprise the role!

Resurrections in the world of comic books do happen, and Killmonger could obviously factor into flashbacks or something similar. Either way, it's hard to escape the feeling that the potential is there for more stories to be told with one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most complex villains.

Who knows, if he somehow survived those injuries at the end of the first movie, perhaps Killmonger will end up being recruited by Baron Zemo for his Thunderbolts? T'Challa was, after all, the one who took him into custody in Captain America: Civil War, so he may very well be out for vengeance here.

2. Kraven The Hunter

Kraven

We mentioned Spider-Man a little earlier in this feature, and if Spider-Man 3 is indeed going to introduce or tease Kraven the Hunter, then there's no reason at all he couldn't appear in this Black Panther sequel. After a quick defeat at the hands of the web-slinger, perhaps the Black Panther will be his next target? Either way, we know Ryan Coogler is interested in the villain.

He actually wanted to include Kraven in the first movie, but was unable to do so due to rights issues. However, with Marvel Studios and Sony on good terms, the villain could easily show up in Spider-Man 3, serve as one of the lead big bads in Black Panther 2, and then appear in his own spinoff - which is being directed by J.C. Chandor - for a "Kraven's Last Hunt" adaptation.

Mixing the worlds of Kraven and Black Panther makes a lot of sense, so fingers crossed on this one.

1. Black Panther (Shuri)

SHuri

Look, we know that Shuri is going to be in Black Panther 2 as it's already been reported that actress Letitia Wright is expected to play a larger role in proceedings in Ryan Coogler's upcoming sequel.

However, it would mean something completely different for Shuri to become the new Black Panther in the movie. The recently released book, The Wakanda Files, confirmed that the young genius has been hard at work attempting to recreate the affects of Wakanda's Heart-Shaped Herb, so perhaps it's that which grants T'Challa's younger sister superpowers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Either way, if T'Challa's story is going to come to an end as a result of Chadwick Boseman's death, then it's a logical next step for Shuri to take over the mantle and become the new Black Panther.

I literally have no idea how they’re gonna deal with this.. but I have complete faith in Ryan Coogler.

@DaHyro - maybe they're going to do an ensemble piece here. Dealing with the loss of T'Challa and only in the final minutes of the movie we see a character take over the mantle.

@DaHyro - wakanda and its story is so much more than just its king... the leaders at odds and more importantly why it should or should not be a part of the larger world is the real narrative... hiding secrets even to their offspring to preserve a myth. i think without boseman it may push coogler to create an even greater story... one that doesn't get tangled up in who is in the black suit and what toys does he have to play with.

Really id say push it back another year, without T'Challa, how much of their plan could they even keep. Dont want to risk having a crappy follow up by rushing

You know, its funny how people are saying they shouldn't recast tchalla out of respect, but we seem to have no problem with this movie being released with little to no delay. Isn't that just as disrespectful?
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 3/4/2021, 2:42 AM
@Origame - Recasting would seem like you are treating him as easily replaceable.

Cancelling the movie all together would take a job away from a lot of his friends and colleagues
Blergh
Blergh - 3/4/2021, 3:55 AM
@Origame - Delaying the movie would make sense, cancelling it outright or recasting would seem disrespectful to Boseman.
Origame
Origame - 3/4/2021, 4:24 AM
@FinnishDude - @Blergh I'm mentioning the little to no delay. The movie is currently in active development. Not to mention its the mcu. You can move them to a different project very easily.

In the same announcement where they stated Chadwick wouldn't be recast is the same one where black panther 2 was announced and confirmed to be in active production. And this really wasn't long after his death. Following the news with the black panther 2 announcement turned his death into a selling point. That is what I have issues with.

@Origame - @Origame - I agree, it's a rationalization. I think Boseman would probably tell anyone that it's not only an honor to play the character, but that the character is too important to be sidelined. Yes Black Panther was an inspirational transcendent kind of film in part because of Boseman's role, but doesn't that also mean the torch should be passed and not snuffed out until we (fans) can accept it? I think they should have waited longer on the release to give people time to grieve Boseman's death, if the fans/studio really wanted to honor his loss. Whenever I hear people talk about this and the respect I think of funerals. It's not for the person that died, but the people who are left. I kinda understood this argument with Fisher as nothing appeared to be saving those movies anyway. No one was lamenting the recast of the oracle in the Matrix even though she also was in just one film. The rush of fans to see another film or show is what creates the issue too, prompting the studio to "get creative" so they can still be respectful, but hit their bottom line. Ever instance is handled differently depending on who it is and what they meant to the show and fans, I sill miss Woodhouse btw. So it's just one of those WandaVision type moments. We grieve because of the love we have for the characters and in some cases people behind them. I don't know of anyone yet that knows the formula for loss so it is what it is really in this case.

Origame - 3/4/2021, 8:58 AM
@The1st - yeah. Apparently it's disrespectful to the guy who was sick while working on these films and probably missed treatments because he knew the role was important. That really sounds like the guy who would want the legacy to die with him?
JonC
JonC - 3/4/2021, 9:08 AM
@Origame - real leaders are lost and real countries have to deal with it... it will be good to see that put to screen... and how artful coogler is in addressing it. i think its going to be another billion dollar movie and not due to CGI and big fights as much as story depth.
Origame
Origame - 3/4/2021, 9:18 AM
@JonC - ...so the first movie then? Or did you forget that was literally the plot of the first movie? From what you're suggesting it should be the last movie again but without tchalla and the reminder that Chadwick died.

Also I'm not questioning the money or the artistic direction it's going in. I'm talking about respect to Chadwick. If it's guaranteed to break a billion then that's not changing how respectful it is.

I'm pretty sure completely shelving Tchalla is the opposite of carrying on Chadwick's legacy. I'm 100% sure he would have wanted such an iconic character re-casted because he understood how important the character is-- in any iteration-- and the power that comes with his story and the responsibility that comes with it. Giving us a lesser version of a Black Panther story goes completely against this spirit.
Orphix
Orphix - 3/4/2021, 2:30 AM
T'Challa is still out there in all the other media forms in which he exists for those who want/need him. Out of respect for Chadwick T'Challa has gone from the MCU. However, the legacy still remains of the character, the actor and the mantle of 'Black Panther'.
Zer0squad
Zer0squad - 3/4/2021, 2:58 AM
@Orphix - Is it respecting Chadwick's work to just let his iteration of T'challa die(for lack of a better word)? From all his interviews you knew for damn sure that he understood what T'challa specifically meant as a character and he understood his responsibility to be able to portray him as an inspiration for young black boys and men. Say what you want about other media but everyone knows you won't get anything close to as many eyeballs as will on an MCU film. By all means take as much time as everyone feels as appropriate to morn Chadwick and not have anymore Black Panther movies. Take as much time as it takes finding the perfect person to carry on Chadwick's legacy with the character. But there is no way you are going to convince me that you are carrying on Chadwick's handwork and legacy without the character that he poured so much of himself into.

I actually think the character will be recast one day, just not in this upcoming film. My interest now is seeing how Ryan and his writers are going to figure this all out and present us with a dynamic film. Really just hope any fight scenes will not have that terrible CGI that the previous film had. More Winter Soldier and less Panther vs. Killmonger please.

Respect for this team dealing with this tough situation, but they should have pushed this back another two years and then recasted. I really don’t have much interest in a black panther movie without the real black panther, T’Challa

@MrDandy - he only became the 'real' BP when a great actor took the mantle and was back by great writing... that assuredly will happen again under Coogler and the MCU... just not from day 1 of new filming after Boseman's untimely passing.
