In Avengers: Endgame, Natasha Romanoff made the heartbreaking decision to jump off that cliff on Vormir in order to secure the Soul Stone for Hawkeye and the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Some fans took issue with it, of course, and argued Clint Barton should have taken his own life as penance for the years he spent as Ronin (they seemed to miss the part where he attempted to do exactly that). Now, Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson has justified Natasha Romanoff's decision to do "whatever it takes" in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

"It's funny because I've had kind of a lot of mixed reactions to her ultimate fate in Endgame. But for me, it made so much sense that she would sacrifice herself not just for the greater good of humanity, but actually for her friends, which was really at the heart of it. She's a good one."

Black Widow definitely helps flesh out Natasha's decision by filling in the gaps between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, and it's likely her death will now take on a different context. Many fans are sure to remain upset that she's dead in the present day, of course, but it's still possible Black Widow's story could be expanded on in other ways.

"In Marvel Studios' Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises," reads the movie's synopsis. "Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger."

In the movie, Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour portrays Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz is Melina. Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige; Black Widow - the first big screen story in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - arrives on July 9th both in theaters and on Disney+.

I thought that it made sense given that the Avengers were really her only family at that point. Looking forward to how her solo movie further contextualizes her decision.

@WeaponXCII - Agreed and in terms of what was set up in Infinity War and Winter Soldier it makes perfect sense. Out of the remaining cast of End Game, the only ones left who could make that sacrifice were Nat and Clint. Also Natasha said back in 2014, that she would die for the ones she's cared for:

?t=74

People can be upset all the want, but End Game gave her character possibly it's best ending

@Deonox - We could have had her in more movies

It made sense, but like all deaths in these films I didn’t really leave an impact for me because they can, and at some point probably will, just get her back. It literally happens to Gamora in the film. I just wish the whole thing about death meaning nothing in comics didn’t have to make the jump to the films

@Twenty23Three - to an extent yes . But that’s not the same gamora she never went through G1 or G2 so it’s a different dynamic we nor the characters know her or how she acts

@ShimmyShimmyYA - yeah but it’s still the same Gamora but with, what a couple of years missing?. At most they’ll play it like an amnesia plot point and like everything in these films be treated as a joke.

@Twenty23Three - true, there’s a lot they can do with it but you’re probably right that they’ll find some way to “restore” her memories

For me it wasn't how she died it was the fact that there were others more expendable than her who could have taken her place while scarjo continued in the role for several more years but because someone wanted to "subvert expectations" this will be her final mcu appearance

I wasn’t crazy about how the stone was obtained definitely doesn’t make sense as far as nobody sacrificed a loved one, suicide doesn’t seem like the same sacrifice as killing a loved one but it was a good scene and can forgive it.What I didn’t like is how she was just kinda forgotten about. You got murals of Tony all over Far from home but Natasha’s sacrifice isn’t viewed as important as Tony’s and that kinda bothered me

It made perfect since within the established rules of the movie.

What didn't make sense to me was how the Avengers decided who to send to Vormir. Like, how did you not send Rhodey to a planet where no one knew what to expect? Felt like Hawkeye could've gone with Nebula and Nat paired with Rhodey, but that obviously would've led to the whole movie falling apart so I get it

It wasn't the fact that she sacrificed herself that got under my skin. It was that she got a recycled death scene from a previous movie. She deserves better than that.
