Don’t know why this even needs to be reiterated. If you’ve read the comics, you would already know that the Skrulls are a multilayered species.

I’m not sure that the humans as a species showed the Skrulls any particular kindness... you had Fury and Maria Rambeau and a seemingly part-Kree Carol. I’m sure that Carol made a lasting impression, but I don’t know about the others. Contrast that with having to hide on a ship and never contact anyone and whatever they might have experienced on the planet itself before Mar-Vell took them to her lab in orbit, and humans were at best just background players assuming they didn’t have any bad run ins prior to what we saw.

Feige knows what he is doing and as he has said previously about this topic, they are trying to make the Skrulls as developed as possible for when Secret Invasion occurs. Its clear that Feige was thinking much further ahead and properly introducing the alien race first and worrying about Secret Invasion later on. Talos and the other refugees are just trying to survive and have been caught up in the midst of an intergalactic war that they want no part of. As Feige says, there are good and bad members of a race (especially during war), and showing both sides is brilliant because it allows you to really flesh out the Skrulls and make them three-dimensional.

We'll see the Evil Skrulls (probably wearing their cap like in the promo art, perhaps Talos and crew took it off since they didn't want to be part of the war anymore), and there are a lot of blanks to fill in during the 24 year period in which Carol is in deep space. Have the film center around the Kree-Skrull war, show us more of both cultures and then 'Winter Soldier' the movie and flip audiences perception of the Skrulls and change the fabric of the MCU going forward, i.e. heading towards Secret Invasion. Could be perfect!!

Talos's daughter was certainly being set up as someone important down the line, they made sure to focus on her a lot, particularly in the scene where she observes her father killing Kree. Whether she is the instigator for the Secret Invasion, or a strong supporter, she will play a role in the future most likely.
