Comic Book History

Who is SILK SPECTRE?
Laurie Juspeczyk was actually the second person to use the name SILK SPECTRE, the first one was her mother, Sally Jupiter. She was pushed by her mother in this role of becoming a crime fighter to follow her footsteps. At first, she resented both her mother and her duty as a superheroine.
First Appearance

Laurie's first involvement in crime fighting is when she joined the group crime busters, a small community of costumed vigilantes started by Captain Metropolis.

On a mission with Dr Manhattan the two soon fall for each other and shortly after the act was introduced that prevented any costumed vigilantes from taking the law into their own hands.

This prompted Laurie to move in with Dr Manhattan and work in a secret government underground lab. However, she stayed in contact with her now alcoholic mother and the Dan Dreiberg, Nite Owl. Laurie and Manhattan's relationship turned sour as he continues to become more distant emotionally due to the nature of his powers.

This pushed the SILK SPECTRE to move in with Nite Owl and start a relationship with him.

SILK SPECTRE and Nite Owl then rescued a colleague, Rorschach from prison. All of these events are happening in the tense period of a possible nuclear war.

After their rescue of Rorschach, Dr Manhattan, who brought her to the surface of Mars so that they can talk, visited SILK SPECTRE. SILK SPECTRE pleaded with Dr Manhattan that he help stop the impending war as he is the only one who has the powers and ability to do so.

Finally convincing Dr Manhattan, the two returned to earth joining Rorschach and Nite Owl, as they faced off a former ally who masterminded the whole nuclear war plot.

In the end we see, Rorschach dead and Dr Manhattan leaving earth once again. SILK SPECTRE and Nite Owl continued their relationship, under new civilian guises.

CBM FIGHT CLUB CHALLENGE

Message to the CBM community:
To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not, please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. MABUHAY CBM and Godspeed!

The Watchmen movie taught me that to look the part of a female super heroine, it ain't about the boobs, it's about the legs. And Akerman has fantastic legs.

The geekcred is Phantom Lady, Silk Spectre is based on her.

She's so freakin hot, and she's got a hot mamma too!!

The answer to the Geek Cred question: Phantom Lady. But, contrary to patriautism's comment, Silk Spectre's only PARTIALLY based on Phantom Lady, primarily for the visual aspect. For the whole mother-daughter relationship thing, that came from Black Canary. Alan Moore, however, primarily based Silk Spectre on the character Nightshade, one of the Charlton Comics characters bought by DC in the early 80's. In fact, Moore based the main characters on most of the Charlton heroes, since he couldn't use the actual characters:

Dr. Manhattan-Captain Atom
Ozymandias-Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt
Nite Owl-Blue Beetle (Ted Kord), with elements of Batman
Rorschach-The Question and Mr. E
The Comedian-Peacemaker, with elements of Marvel's Nick Fury

Of course, the only full DC analogues in the story is the Minutemen, based on the Justice Society of America.

I really didn't like her in the movie she was the weak link in the film. Rorschach stole the movie and the book as well. Do Rorschach next please.

It's interesting how these "who are they" posts have evolved. I'd kind of like some more of the original style, in which you showed the actual evolution of the costumes, rather than just offering a biography of the character...

Watchmen is my favorite ALL TIME CBM, with The Dark Knight coming close in sencond place. It's smart, sexy, it has great music and visuals and it's respectful to the comic source (even improve it with a better ending). Kudos to Zack Snyder and his team for delivering such a great movie.

BTW Malin Akerman is gorgeous.

In my eyes, she was one of the parts that ruined the Watchmen movie.

Malin Akerman was a great Silk Spectre. Watchmen is one of the best CBM's ever. id say top 5.
maybe Malin Ackerman could be a good Black Canary too??

@Maia87 I loved her costume in the movie! it's pretty sexy and she doesn't need a super short skirt like Supergirl or show cleavage to kick ass. The black and yellow work nice together and give it a kind of spectre-like mysterious feel, kinda creepy.

I always felt Snyder got it backwards with Laurie. I think Carla Guglio should've played the Silk Specter and I think Malin should've played her mother. The perfect person to play the Silk Specter is Angelina Jolie (busty, bitchy and tough) Malin comes off as just too happy and spunky to fit that part but those qualities would've been great for the elder Silk Specter. Guglio on the other hand showed she could be tough in Sin City and I think it would've worked well in the Watchmen.

Silk Spectre: The only reasons I paid attention to the Watchmen.

@Drykillogic- The graphic novel is recyclable refuse. The movie was a slight improvement.

Malin Akerman is so much more hotter in this then Harold and Kumar or The Heartbreak Kid...she is a lot more sexier with brown hair, then blonde hair...with nice little perky tits lol...as far as her portrayal goes, I don't know this comic, but I loved her character in Watchman...is there more then one issue of watchman or was it a one time novel, like the spawn/batman novel?

@pollmaster, thanks for the article, learned a little more about this character...
