EDITORIAL: DrKinsolving’s Top Woman of Comic Book Movies

With so many great comic book movies and so many powerful female actresses, I decided to make a list of some of my favorites. Without these ladies, CBMs would be lamer than lame. This time I used numbers, but the numbers still don’t really mean anything and the order will probably change tomorrow

Sofia Boutella

She hasn’t been in many movies yet and she hasn’t totally proven herself as an actress but it’s my list, so f*** off.  Seriously though, I think she’s extremely talented and I’m positive that she can beat every hater out there in a break dance battle.  That definitely stands for something.  She has the ability to draw you in with her physicality, beauty and voice and then turn on you in an instant when you least expect it.  Her many talents were put to good use as she brought Gazelle to life in “Kingsman: The Secret Service”.  I can’t wait to see her in Star Trek Beyond, the recent set pictures of her look amazing.  She also should have been cast as Elektra on “Netflix’s Daredevil” show but I’m positive that Elodie Yung will own the role as Ms. Natchios.  I hope Marvel Studios or DC/WB has at least been in contact and that she’ll eventually have a role in another CBM.  I think she would be great as Echo (Maya Lopez).

Favorite CBMs:
Kingsmen

Scarlett Johansson

One of the first movies I remember seeing Scarlett in was “Lost in Translation”.  She was funny and she really drew the audience into her character.  “Ghost World” was another great example of this, the movie also shows how she is a versatile actress with a lot of talent.  When I heard that she was talking on Black Widow in the MCU, I was a little cautious because I never saw her as an action star but all of those worries faded and she pulled it off.  Looking forward to seeing what the Russo Brothers will do with her character once again in “Civil War”.

Favorite CBMs:
Captain America: Winter Soldier
The Avengers
Ghost World

Emma Stone

In my opinion, the only good thing to come out of TASM franchise is Emma Stone.  She played Gwen perfectly and she could just as easily pull off MJ.  The first movie I saw her in was “Superbad” and then she rocked in “Zombieland” and then…. she continued to show her range in movies like “The Help” and “Birdman”.   Hopefully we see her in more CBMs, I think she could definitely have a cameo working at The Daily Bugle in the MCU.  This is the only time that I will ever talk about TASM franchise in a positive light and it’s all because of Emma Stone.

Favorite CBMs:
TASM
TASM 2

Amy Adams

Amy Adams is amazing.  From more comedic roles like the “Hot Girl” on “The Office” and emotional roles like Charlene in “The Fighter” to Lois Lane in “Man of Steel”.  In the comics, Lois Lane is an award-winning journalist and the primary love interest of Superman and in the movie Adams pulls this off with ease.  She’s powerful, assertive, smart, beautiful and most of all she won’t back down from a story and isn’t afraid to uncover the truth.  Really looking forward to seeing her in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and as a recurring character in the DCEU.

Favorite CBMs
Man of Steel

 Angelina Jolie

Angelina is a very talented actress, it’s obvious from her resume and recently she has proven to be a talented director as well.  She played her role in “Wanted” as  the character named Fox along side James McAvoy’s Wesley to perfection.  If you haven’t seen “Wanted check it out, it’s a fun ride and in retrospect it feels like one of those projects where everything just fit.  Jolie plays a teacher and mentor to a frustrated office worker that learns that he’s the son of a professional assassin.  The training sequences, and dramatic scenes in which we see Jolie help transform Wesley from a pill popping office worker with low self-esteem, no money, and a girlfriend that is cheating on him with Chris Pratt to a deadly assassin that can literally curve bullets to hit a target is more than worth your time.

Favorite CBMs
Wanted (2008)

Rosario Dawson

I’ve been a big fan of Rosario since I saw her on the big screen in “Sin City”.  Her character was unpredictable, mean, angry, and in a strange way nurturing.  She proved that she could act in an ensemble movie with a star-studded cast and still be a major highlight.  Rosario has gone on to big things in Hollywood, starring in movies like “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints”, “Death Proof” , “The 25th Hour” , “Trance” and she’s even voiced Wonder Woman in the DC Comics animated movie “Justice League: Throne of Atlantis”.  Recently she played Clair Temple, night shift nurse working at Metro-General Hospital who took care of Matt Murdock whenever he was injured during his missions as Netflix’s Daredevil.

Favorite CBMs:
Sin City
Netflix’s Daredevil

Kim Basinger

“Stop the press, who is that?”

That’s Vicki Vale, I will forever be a fan of Basinger for giving us Vicki Vale, not to mention her cameo in “Wayne's World 2 as Honey Horneé or her role as Holli Would in Cool World.  With all those roles aside, Basinger is a very, very talented actress, and has played many roles to perfection over the years.  Movies like “L.A. Confidential” , “Blind Date” ,  and “The Natural” come to mind.

Favorite CBMs:
Batman (1989)

 Jennifer Lawrence

H8ters gonna H8te.  I don’t care what anyone says, Lawrence is an amazing actress, with movies like “Winters Bone” ,  “The Beaver” , “Silver Linings Playbook” , and “American Hustle” under her belt any CBM would be lucky to have her.  Her performance as Mystique in the X-Men films has been awesome, the only down fall is that they can’t seem to get her make-up right and it looks like she’s ready to join the Blue Man group for the next show.  Looking forward to see her own the role again in “X-Men: Apocalypse”. The only reason she isn’t higher on the list is because she hasn’t been in enough CBMs.  Yeah, I know, she’s been in more CBMs than Sofia Boutella and Sofia is number 1.  True, but I don’t care because Sofia Boutella could dance every person on this list into a coma.

Favorite CBMs
X-Men: First Class
X-Men: Days of Future Past

  Zoe Saldana + Karen Gillan

We’ve made it to #9, if your still reading, actually a picture with the #9 in it, and it doesn’t really represent where these actresses are placed on the list because a number is just a number.  Zoe and Karen owned their roles in “Guardians of The Galaxy” as Gamora and Nubula, respectively.  They had great chemistry on screen together and you believed that they were both daughters of Thanos.  They did a good job of portraying the sibling relationship dynamic that often involves feelings of jealously, anger, hate, and love.  Looking forward to seeing more of them in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”.

Favorite CBMs
Guardians of The Galaxy

  Natalie Portman

Portman is another amazing actress.  She won me over as Mathilda in “Léon: The Professional and proved at a young age that she could hold her own with A list actors like Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight).  Portman’s work speaks for itself, with movies like “Garden State” , “Closer” and “Black Swan” under her belt.  One of my favorite roles of hers and the reason that she’s on this list is her portrayal of Evey in “V for Vendetta”.  Her character drew me into the story and captured the curiosity, anger, angst, righteousness, and eventually contentedness of a character willing to fight the good fight for all of the right reasons.

Favorite CBMs:
V for Vendetta
Thor
Thor: The Dark World

Because it really wouldn't be a complete list without these ladies....

Hayley Atwell

Favorite CBMs:
Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Agent Carter

Chloë Grace Moretz

Favorite CBMs:
Kick-Ass
Kick-Ass 2

Michelle Pfeiffer

Favorite CBMs:
Batman Returns

Elizabeth Olsen

Favorite CBMs:
Avengers: Age of Ultron

Soon To Be On This List

Margot Robbie

Gal Gadot

Marisa Tomei

Honorable Mentions

Selma Blair for her role as Liz Sherman in Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

Great editorial!
Flawless list too! I like how you've mentioned the under appreciated Kim Basinger, who was awesome in Batman.

Zoe Saldana?

I probably would've added Hayley Atwell to the list, and probably Anne Hathaway and Eva Green too, but otherwise this is perfection!

Debora Nascimento is my #1.

Of course I'll add Hayley Atwell, who really transformed a small comic role like Peggy Carter into a fiery, kick ass and forever memorable "love interest", who is excellent at leading her own show.

I agree with Doom- the omission of Olsen and Attwell is a major negative.

But asides from that, great stuff!

Famke Janssen as Jean Grey too!
she really embodied many qualities of Jean that makes her such a great character, Janssen was so likeable, you could see why everybody loved her. Caring, restrained but powerful, beautiful and it was a love triangle worth caring about, thanks to Famke.

Am I the only one who thinks that Kim Basinger in 89's Batman was just annoying.

Gus, she's the new Aunt May.

@CherryBomb

Thanks!! Kim is amazing. Haley should definitely be on the list, your right. Love her role as Peggy, and the emotions she was able to stir up in that TWS scene with Cap (even with the CGI) is one of my favorite CBM scenes. I knew I’d miss a few, haha.

@blackandyellow

Haha, Zoe rocks man. And, thank you for posting those Debora Nascimento images, thank you.

@SauronsBANE

Thanks man!! Eva Green!! I forgot her too, dammit.

@DrDoom

Thanks man, appreciate it. I hope your planning on scheduling your Ultron editorial with the Blu-Ray release, because I want to read that thing, soon, haha.

Olsen was great but I need to see more of her, her character has so much potential in the aftermath of AOU, but yeah, she should definitely be on the list too

@Gusto

Tomei is playing Aunt May in the Spider-Man reboot and yeah, Mendes rocks

@AlexanderLykins
@Gutspinner
@TheBritAvenger

Thanks!!

Great list and well justified but I would take out Natalie Portman as her Jane FOster is a bit of a wet blanket and put in the lovely Hayley Atwell, agent Carter is awesome.

Also how could you forget the stunning Morena Baccarin???

@SimplyAz

Thanks man, true, Portman was awesome in V for Vandetta though, and Baccarin should be on the list, hope she rocks in Deadpool

@Doopie

Totally, should have added Pfeiffer too, good call

@DrKinsolving

Good list though it is a crime you forgot Hayley Atwell. Personally I would take off Jennifer Lawrence because from the movies I have seen her in Hunger Games and the 2 X-men movies she didn't wow me. I haven't seen the movies you mentioned and I have been meaning to watch Hustle and Silver's Lining Playbook but I haven't so from what I have seen her in she wasn't all that.

I rarely ever agree with b&y on any subject, but I might just have to agree with him this one time...

Pretty good list! Only ones I'd disagree with is Scarlet Jo and Amy Adams. I like Amy Adams in general, but idk, I didn't like her in Man of Steel. (well, I liked her first scene, then it went downhill for me.). and honestly? I just will never understand the appeal to Scarlet. In my own opinion, I find her just insanely forgettable. Hell, there are movies I would put in my top 15 list that she is a main character in, and I will forget her existence in them.

I also would've placed Selma Blair way higher, I Think she did a fantastic job in the Hellboy movies.

Probably would have added Michelle Pfifer in there as well, and Tilda Swinton for her amazing portrayal of Gabriel in Constantine.

@pesmerga44

True, I really should have added Atwell, I knew I'd forget a few, ha. Lawrence is really talented, imo, check out some of those movies if you have a chance, especially "Silver Linings Playbook"

@JokerFanHAhaHA

Totally, Pfeiffer was awesome in Batman Returns, and Swinton is amazing, can't wait to see her in Dr Strange

@DrKinsolving Very Well done! With the upcoming Female ghostbusters movie, and female superheroes i'm glad hollywood is finally progressing showing us women too can be action heroes. Hopefully in a few years we no longer have nearly as many Damsels in distress.

Imagine Taken but with the mother instead. Keep up the good though

Did you seriously leave out that hot piece of ass from Iron Man 3? The short girl with the boy haircut who helped Tony in Tennessee?

Also, "Taken" but with the Mother instead reminded me of this, haha

@DrKinSolving Oh wow, to be honest i don't even remember the plot to those movies. I was only 13 when vol 2 came out on TV and only ever caught on somewhere during the middle. I know what im doing this weekend now
