During a battle with Onslaught, a villain born from the minds of Professor X and Magneto, it appeared that the Avengers and Fantastic Four died in battle. In reality, Franklin Richards had created a pocket universe for the heroes, and Marvel Comics used this opportunity to reboot the characters with Heroes Reborn.
The origins of Captain America, Iron Man, and The Thing were updated (the latter, for example, fought in the Gulf War instead of World War II), but these reimaginings were widely hated by fans.
As a result, it only took around a year for this to be undone, and the absence of these characters was explained by Franklin having hidden them all in a pocket universe where they'd be safe. Marvel Comics has reimagined the idea a handful of times, with the event's 10-year anniversary marked by the Exiles paying a visit to that reality. 2021, however, marks the 25-year anniversary!
That could explain this teaser shared by Marvel. As you can see, the publisher is asking "Whatever Happened to Earth's Mightiest Heroes?" That likely means we're going to return to this world to see what became of the "Heroes Reborn." It's an interesting decision, and one that's admittedly intriguing.
Marvel's April solicitations are being released later, so we'll keep you guys updated as we learn more!
