It's becoming clear that this year's San Diego Comic-Con will not be taking place this July as planned, but recent comments from California's Governor have now cast doubt on the 2021 edition of the show...

Despite the event's organisers insisting that this year's San Diego Comic-Con was set to take place as planned, it's recently become clear that won't happen as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, though, comments from California Governor Gavin Newsom point to next year's show being at risk of not happening either.

As you can see below, Associated Press California reporter Kathleen Ronayne has shared comments from Newsom which indicate that he won't allow any mass gatherings until a vaccine is found for the Coronavirus. As of right now, that could be upwards of a year to eighteen months from now, and even if it's before that, it will take a long time for it to be rolled out.

Currently, the San Diego Convention Center is being used as an emergency centre for the city's homeless population in a bid to halt the spread of COVID-19 throughout the city of San Diego.

Honestly, any sort of large events taking place in the near future is unlikely as it's simply too risky. Even after countries reach their peak and flatten the curve, having tens of thousands of people in the same place at the same time risks creating a second peak. Needless to say, this is going to hurt the convention industry in a big way moving forward.

We'll keep you guys updated as we learn more!

Makes sense, the virus decides the timeline here

@HeavyMetal4Life - And that's thousands without a job. When unemployment runs out then what? It's easy to go on and say "We have to fight the virus" but the economy is more important whether you agree or not. Without a proper plan to secure financial assistance to those affected by this pandemic we will become a third world country within a year.

@SonOfAGif - It's easier to find a "new job" than to be dead. Why rush to start an economy just because people feel insecure? The plan is to start lifting the ban on some counties that have little to no cases near May. NY is def not coming back till next year. I'm pretty sure they will cancel all celebrations like July 4th, Christmas, New Years, etc. too if things don't get better because every day it's getting worst.

@SonOfAGif - without the ability to test and contact trace on a widespread scale that currently diesnt exist, without the ability to ensure public health and safety, the economy is a second thought. You need what I just wrote before you open anything up. The economy doesnt function well with dead people...

@mastakilla39 - Now I ask what jobs will be available for the millions currently unemployed when their corporations or small businesses still can't open? 6.6 million people can't work for Target, Amazon, and Walmart. Not to mention a person with a mortgage. Eventually banks are not going to keep going month to month without revenue.

@HeavyMetal4Life - And that is the problem. There is no timetable let alone a plan in general by Congress or the CDC to put forth mandatory widespread testing. And until that happens they will continue to keep things shut down. The proper way to handle this pandemic and to team up with ever type of American manufacturing company you can and have them create testing kits. Make every American take a test and all of those who test positive must get removed and taken to a mandatory quarantine facility being a hospital or makeshift hospital until they become cured.

@SonOfAGif - I mean, I totally agree with all this, this is more or less what is necessary.
