DEADPOOL Star Ryan Reynolds Comments On Marvel's Potential Acquisition Of Fox's X-MEN Characters DEADPOOL Star Ryan Reynolds Comments On Marvel's Potential Acquisition Of Fox's X-MEN Characters

Earlier, we found out that there's a chance Disney/Marvel could reacquire the rights to 21st Century Fox's Marvel Comics characters, & Ryan Reynolds is wondering what that means for The Merc with a Mouth.

Tonight brought us the (potentially) huge news that 21st Century Fox is looking to sell the majority of its assets to the Walt Disney Co., which means that there is a chance that all characters associated with The X-Men and The Fantastic Four could come on home to Marvel Studios.

An update to the report indicates that both parties have since ceased negotiations, however, there is still a possibility that talks will reconvene.

One man who seems as surprised by this whole situation as the rest of us is Ryan Reynolds, who plays Wade Wilson in Fox's X-Universe-set Deadpool movies. The actor sent out this humorous Tweet earlier on today:

Well, if - and right now it is a big if - the studios were to come to some sort of deal, hopefully it'll affect The Merc With a Mouth in the most awesome way possible and open up the potential for lots of new character pairings. And yes, it also means Deadpool would have to reign in the f-bombs... among other things.

Again, things aren't necessarily looking good for this to happen any time soon - but then again,  many people said the exact same thing before the Sony/Spider-Man deal went through, so you never know!

Here is a list of 54 r-rated movies that have been released by Disney subsidiaries. can we stop spreading the notion that Disney = censorship!

It would be incredible. Not sure if Disney would mess with Deadpool too much, though I could see them trying to “hero him up” a bit more. Then again, they seem cool with the Netflix stuff.

@HumanError -

This is actually the perfect opportunity for Marvel Studios to develop their first sub-studio. Something like, maybe...

"Marvel Knights"

Mostly as an homage to the comics, but also because of its darker feel. I know Deadpool isn't the type of character used in these comic titles, but that's easily ignored.

This is where Blade could fall under, a possible continuation of 'New Mutants' if it's a success, Moon Knight.. hell, this could open up more probability for a PUNISHER film.

Utilize small references to the standard MCU, but only mix and crossover with other titles in this sub studio.

Disney's name & logo isn't used in marketing & labeling for the MCU so their name wouldn't be on this. And without the connections to the PG-13 MCU, they won't use that to sell 'em, accidentally bringing in the 'young crowd'.

Well, I guess a guy can dream.

@SKetCH -

I’ve hoped for same thing, and it makes sense. Do lower budget movies which allow them to take more risks, as Blade, Moon Knight, Punisher, etc are properties that can be made comparatively cheap, especially compared to the budgets of the big tent pole releases. Still a part of the MCU but a separate sub studio making these lower budget, harder edged, grittier (Hollywood execs love that adjective) films.

@SKetCH - "Marvel MAX" would be the appropriate analogy.

And while I don't think it's impossible, I think people misunderstand Feige (or Disney's) position on this. Feige makes relatively light films that range in terms of low-end of a target audience as low as ~8 for some franchises (Guardians) to as high as ~12 (Winter Soldier) because that's honestly what the guy wants to do.

It's what appeals to him as much as being good for business. And there's honestly nothing wrong with that. There are a few R-rated films that have been cultural phenomenon (after PG-13 became a real thing), but there's really not much you can't do in a PG-13 movie, as long as you're smart about it.

The MPAA is a dumb system, and I'm not saying it's ideal to play within the arbitrary barriers of only saying certain words in certain contexts for certain audiences, and such. But the history of comics has been squarely "family friendly".

It's funny that people forget that the vast majority of Deadpool's comics have been (wait for it) Authorized by the Comic Code.

The point is... there definitely is room at Marvel for some harder fare, but honestly not much need for anything too much harder. And the very very few characters that really need to "go R" are mostly characters that demonstrate how silly the MPAA system itself actually is.

In the grand scheme of things, I care so much more seeing a character adapted well and faithfully than I do if they can say [frick] without getting bleeped.

I can't even say [frick] without getting bleeped to talk about it!

@HumanError - My thoughts exactly. My guess is they would keep him cause it's working, and integrate him to the hero side a bit more.
