Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has been halted along with every other big movie and TV show in the works, but composer Alan Menken has shared a major update on the project!

Shooting wasn't supposed to begin until April in anticipation of a 2021 release, and with so much uncertainty surrounding everything, we don't know when work starts back up. Menken has clearly been busy collaborating with Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda, though, because the music is already done.

Confirming that he's still attached to work on long-delayed Enchanted sequel Disenchanted (whoop!), the composer also reveals that Hercules is currently being adapted into a Broadway show.

The big news, however, is that The Little Mermaid will feature the original songs from the animated classic along with four new ones!

Menken remains actively involved in Disney's live-action remakes after crafting songs for 2017's Beauty and the Beast and the powerful "Speechless" in last year's Aladdin. His songs for The Little Mermaid are bound to go through some changes, with the "blackfish" line from "Under the Sea" one obvious example of something in desperate need of an update.

Been looking forward to this one. So far all the live action remakes have been pretty good.

Of course they do, they need to pad it to two hours and to try and get at least a nomination for best original song.

@DetBullock - we've heard their attempts to add songs to these live action remakes. We literally had jasmine imagine singing about independence before being dragged away so the classic story can continue.

@Origame - that moment was unintentionally funny

I have no idea how good this one will be, and I'm not particularly interested in it. But I'm happy for Halle Bailey getting this. She has a stunningly beautiful voice.

(She's the first one that sings)

@Necropolitan - Hey, the first one is actually Chloe (the older sister) Halle is on the right and has a softer tone compared to Chloe’s. Still, both of them are pretty amazing vocalists and all around talents (they produced a bulk of their album in their home studio)

@kolatrl - I know. I meant the first person that sings on the song is Halle.

I don't feel comfortable about this live action remake. The film came out when I was four years old and watching it again recently was a bit traumatic.

That's like they're making up for having no songs in Mulan lmao. Halle Bailey is an incredible singer though. I just wasn't a big fan of any of Rob Marshall's 2010s work.

Disney: Stop making remakes of remakes of retold stories! live action is just a way to make money off our childhood faves. Quit being so money hungry and think of your fanbase. What would Walt want? He certainly would not want you to keep remaking his originals. Keep making new stories. nothing is ever original, but blatantly remaking the old stuff over and over again is frustrating and shows a distinct lack of caring. It's lazy.

The only live action animated remake I want to see is the hunchback of notre dame and Disney will probably never do it because of the "adult themes".

@CurlyBill - I think the only one that they've said is "off-limits" is Pocahontas, for obvious reasons.

Here's the most recent update on Hunchback of Notre Dame:

If Little Mermaid is black in this, they should make Moana white. Come on, no double standards.
