Chris Evans is going from super hero to space ranger as the Marvel star will suit up Buzz Lightyear in Pixar's Lightyear, an origin film about the actual test pilot who inspired the toy we grew to love.

Star Wars isn't the only galaxy we'll be visiting in the coming years. Pixar announced during Disney Investor Day that  Lightyear, a new origin film about the beloved Space Ranger from the Toy Story franchise, is on the way.

"Lightyear is the definitive story of the original Buzz Lightyear," Pixar teased.

When Pixar says "original Buzz Lightyear," the studio means the "young test pilot" that inspired the actual Space Ranger toy. Chris Evans, perhaps best known as Captain America from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will star as this space hero and he was sure to clarify that he isn't portraying the toy.

"And just to be clear, this isn’t Buzz Lightyear the toy," he wrote on Twitter shortly after the film was announced. "This is the origin story of the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on."

The announcement, while mostly well-received, was also met with the usual crowd upset that Tim Allen (the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story movies) wasn't returning. Seeing as how this is the story about the real Buzz Lightyear and not the toy, the casting of Evans makes more sense now.

In the original Toy Story franchise, Buzz Lightyear is a Space Ranger tasked with defending the galaxy from the Evil Emperor Zurg. What we don't know is how much of the toy's backstory is fiction and how much of it is based on truth. Did this young test pilot really face off against an evil alien emperor? We'll find out in 2022!

Lightyear will blast into theaters on June 17, 2022 --  assuming theaters are still around by then.

This is actually pretty awesome. A story within a story. Not the Buzz we love but the real Buzz Lightyear who inspired the creation of the Buzz we know and love.

Wonder if they at least asked Tim Allen, I know Tom Hanks retired as Woody, but pretty sure Tim Allen would still be up for playing Buzz

@dracula - I feel like this is fair game since this is technically a different character.

@OmegaDaGrodd - Disney was just doing too much at once. What saved Star Wars was The Mandalorian. And thank God they focused on D+ for the future of the franchise and not the movies anymore. But Kevin Feige is their saving grace for Marvel. That guy just makes them so much money.

Ugh.....I kind of hate this. They already did this idea with a kids show a long time ago. They are just trying to cash in on Toy Story AGAIN! They should have left the franchise alone after Toy Story 3. Four was still good but a textbook case of diminishing returns compared to the original 3
