Disney and Pixar have released some fun new character posters for Luca, a movie that promises to showcase one incredible summer in the Italian seaside town of Portorosso...seen through the eyes of a sea monster named Luca (who receives the spotlight here alongside Alberto and Giulia).

This certainly looks like something different from Pixar, and that animation style is definitely a departure for the studio. Luca is also the second of their movies to head straight to Disney+; just like last year's Soul, it will be available for free (so, no $29.99 "Premier Access") on June 18th.

There have been rumblings online that those who worked on the movie in Pixar are unhappy that this title is being released for free, especially when Disney Animation's Raya and the Last Dragon received a theatrical run and cost $29.99 on the streaming service. If you put yourselves in their shoes, it must feel pretty demoralising that Luca is now their second movie to be dropped on Disney+.

Luca is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.

The voice cast features Jacob Tremblay as Luca Paguro, Jack Dylan Grazer as Alberto Scorfano, Emma Berman as Giulia Marcovaldo, Saverio Raimondo as town bully Ercole Visconti, Maya Rudolph as Luca’s mom Daniela, Marco Barricelli as Giulia’s dad Massimo, Jim Gaffigan as Luca’s dad Lorenzo,  Sandy Martin as Luca’s grandma, and Giacomo Gianniotti as a local fisherman.

We'll be attending the global press conference for Luca this weekend and will be sharing our review later this month. Keep checking back here for much more on the movie over the next few weeks!

sounds like it has potential.

Just rewatched Lion King and Lion King 2, great stuff and man is Lion King 2 the only good direct to video disney sequel. Looks better, the writing is better and actually pushes the story further. Good enough that it probably could have gone to theaters as is.

I will admit I do agree that it's pretty [frick]ed up that Disney keeps putting Pixar movies for free on Disney plus. it's nice because im not paying 30 dollars for any movie but it is does almost seem like it's Disney saying it's not good enough. When it's Pixar one of the best animation studios out there. Disney should either have it be on the premier access or have all of their movies free like this is. Cause as of right now it looks like it's playing favorites

@Mrcool210 - Yeah Disney is a shit show right now because Bob Chapek is undoing everything Bob Iger did in the past. Chapek is letting all the "marketing team and business consultants" drive the company vs the creative film makers who have been doing it during Iger's term. It's stupid how marketing is telling the audience to enjoy Pixar films like Soul and Luca at home because the numbers may not be as big as Raya the Last Dragon...

This is why Alan Horn (Iger's right hand man) is retiring too.
