Rachel Zegler (Shazam! Fury of the Gods) is set to play the title role in Disney's live-action remake of Snow White, and in a new interview, she explains why certain "problematic" aspects were changed.

Rachel Zegler, who made her comic book movie debut as Daughter of Atlas Anthea in the recent Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is set to play the title role in Disney's upcoming live-action remake of Snow White, and a series of interview clips (conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike) with the actress have started doing the rounds online.

We already know that Disney has made a few significant changes to the original (no more Seven Dwarfs, for example), and in this latest clip, Zegler explains why the "problematic" love story has been altered for a modern-day audience.

"The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so," she says when asked how this new take on Snow White will differ from the animated classic. "There's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird! Weird. So, we didn't do that this time."

"[The new movie] is really not about the love story at all, which is really, really wonderful," she added. "All of [the Prince's] scenes could get cut, who knows? It's Hollywood, baby."

Zegler was clearly joking about the Prince's scenes being cut, but her comments have still raised the ire of some people online. Still, if you go back and watch the original Snow White, it would be hard to argue that there are quite a few aspects that would be more than a little problematic in today's climate.

In a separate interview, Zegler admitted that she only recently saw the original all the way through because it scared her so much as a kid. Believe it or not, someone took issue with her comments.

Disney HATES you (The paying Customer).

She's been told to say all of this intentionally to piss people off for conversation/clicks and is repeating what Disney have told her to say. There's photos of her on her social media as a child dressed up in a Snow White costume so she's definitely liked it as a kid - she's been told to say she only saw it once, she's been told to say the prince is a stalker, etc...

Its funny, this film looks like utter cheap garbage and the star is out a year before the premiere talking sh*t about classic original animated film. But good that its so progressive that they didnt hire 7 actual dwarfs this time.

Yes, let's take this love story and bastardize it to the point one of the two can easily be cut. Truly progressive 🙄

Also, as for the Stalker claim, here's a thorough debunking of that.

@Origame - Funny. I always considered a story about the lengths of vanity and standing by what's right. Something focused on the evil queen's irrational hunt of an innocent.

Never saw the original as a love story. But you're probably right. If love stories are meant to be stories where the guy only appears in the last 3 minutes, doesn't get even a name, or basically any lines... Then I've been probably been looking at the wrong stories.
Origame
Origame - 8/15/2023, 11:27 AM
@AzorAhai - ...the movie's plot is literally resolved by true love's kiss.

Also, how is she standing up for what's right? The whole plot is her running away from an evil queen trying to kill her. You think a criminal would just accept dying there?
Origame
Origame - 8/15/2023, 11:27 AM
@AzorAhai - also, no he was there throughout the story.
AzorAhai
AzorAhai - 8/15/2023, 11:38 AM
@Origame - The huntsman (who appears more than your beloved prince) stood for what is right.

Sorry if I offended your offended stance. You are free to champion for love stories where there is no real relationship until the minimum -screentime guy appears and kisses the dead girl.
Origame
Origame - 8/15/2023, 11:43 AM
@AzorAhai - dude, first of all, I've already confirmed the prince is in most of the movie before that. And shares scenes with snow white, where they show clear interest in each other. Watch the video. It goes over all of this.

And the huntsman is by no means a major character. You can't justify the whole story as being about standing up for what's right when the only example you have is someone who's barely a footnote in the story.

And I'm not offended by your comment. Just saying you haven't seen it recently.
AzorAhai
AzorAhai - 8/15/2023, 11:59 AM
@Origame - The prince is by no means a main character in the original. The queen, Snow White, the seven dwarves and probably the mirror have more screen time than him. He's secondary at most (weird when he's like the 9th character in order of screen time on a movie with like 10 characters). He's background in my book.

Dude has no name. Appears at the beginning to sing about how in love he is with a girl he just saw. Leaves. Appears at the end to kiss her. Doesn't even fight or have scenes with the villain.

For me, that's a lousy love story. Honestly, interaction, relationship and chemistry with the main character are zero. And the true love's kiss plot sucks. I am not going to say it's childish or anything like that, it is after all an old kid's movie. But, story wise, is so weak and not elaborated upon, taken out of the writer's arse. Honestly, plot wise, Martha twist from Zack Snyder makes better sense.

But again, I'm not here to yuck your yum. You can glorify the original that being "destroyed" here all you like. Heck, you can go rewatch it right now to cleanse the spur taste from this girl's comments.
Origame
Origame - 8/15/2023, 12:18 PM
@AzorAhai - 1) no he definitely has more screentime than the mirror. I'll give you the seven dwarves, but they're also pretty important.

2) you're calling him a secondary character when he literally resolves the plot 🤣. Just admit you haven't seen it in a while.

3) except the whole thing is resolved by her finding true love with him. It may not be a deep love story, but it's objectively a love story.

4) I'd say it's objectively being destroyed, since the character that resolved the plot originally is someone who can be cut now.
AzorAhai
AzorAhai - 8/15/2023, 12:34 PM
@Origame - 1) I am not so sure of that, but the fact that it's a close match is already bad sign on itself for the prince's relevance.

2) He comes only to solve the aftermath and do nothing else. Background characters, cameos, or even objects (not characters) can solve a climax. That doesn't make them relevant by themselves. Climax and plot are different by the way. Plot was the queen hunting Snow White. The aftermath was Snow White poisoned, which he solved. He had no hand in actually stopping the queen or the plot of the movie. The queen was already dealt with by then. There was no danger anymore.

3) The whole thing was resolved by the prince? Go rewatch the movie yourself. The queen was dealt with by then. Also, "love" here is just a label, since there was nothing pointing to love except for a kids that came out of nowhere. The writer could have made Snow White return by getting a true friendship handshake and the story wouldn't have changed at all.

4) Again he resolved the aftermath. The plot, the queen and the themes of the story had already been resolved by the time lazy-arse Prince arrived. I would argue that the prince was someone that be cut in the original with minimum changes and no impact to the whole point of the story.

But again you are free to fawn about the love story you see in the original. Campaign for others to feel as strongly about it as you do. I myself think it was acceptable for its time and target audience, but it would be stupid and lazy to adapt it to the T today.
Origame
Origame - 8/15/2023, 12:43 PM
@AzorAhai - 1) even if that were the case, Hannibal lecter had 14 minutes of screentime in silence of the lambs. Is he irrelevant?

2) that and showing up earlier for snow white to fall in love with him, setting up the pay off of him giving the kiss. Dude, this is textbook love story. In fact quite literally, because this is basically the blue print of love stories.

3) she died, yes. But she lived on in the magic keeping snow white in the coma. The queen had effectively won until the prince came.

4) the plot is that the queen trying to kill snow white. She succeeded if not for the prince.
AzorAhai
AzorAhai - 8/15/2023, 12:55 PM
@Origame - 1) That's like 10 min more than what the Prince had in Snow White. And yes. Hannibal Lecter is relevant to the story. The prince is background to Snow White Story.

2) Text book of any story ( if you knew about storytelling) is more than "Here is the character. Oops he is gone for the whole movie. Oh he's back for the payoff". At the beginning of the story he just appeared, sang, didn't cross more than 2 actual words with Snow White. You might see that as love, but I don't.

3) If Snow White dies the vanity teams of the evil queen and the unexpected friendship of the dwarves themes would have already got to their conclusion. It would have been a tragedy. But still delivered the story. The prince was literally just there to have the strong man save the day. But he really didn't even know the queen was a problem, and he didn't even developed any love story besides being bookends to appease happy ending guys. He was just there.

4) And again, if she succeeded, if her senseless evil killed them both... The story would still be a complete story. Same thing if you had any other way of resurrecting Snow White. Getting rid of the prince in this particular story would be very easy and would still have a complete story.

Honestly, Snow White could have been brought back to life by Dopey and the story would have been as good as the original.
Origame
Origame - 8/15/2023, 1:05 PM
@AzorAhai - 1) and snow white is a much shorter movie.

2) yes. Hence why this story actually has him and snow white fall in love with each other instead of "there and not again" like you claim.

3) but snow white isn't a tragedy. Hence the prince saves the day. You might as well say Tony stark isn't important to endgame because if he were gone for the finale, Thanos would do the snap and everyone would die.

4) so what if it's a complete story if it's still not the story that was told? Hell, you can have it without the evil queen or snow white and make it about dwarves living in the woods. That's true, but that's not the story they told.
AzorAhai
AzorAhai - 8/15/2023, 1:10 PM
@Origame - Tony Stark had way more screen time and a story before the snap.

In truth, while I've seen you like to engage in the minor arguments all day. I've spent my daily dose a few minutes ago. You are free to continue your rant. I may go see this movie, which might suck or not, only time will tell. And the world will move on.

@AzorAhai - dude, I've already debunked screentime.

And you say you have, yet you gave pretty significant responses to me saying the prince was important.

Maybe next time think about your points (and maybe watch the movie you're commenting on) if you're actually hoping to change minds.
AzorAhai
AzorAhai - 8/15/2023, 1:18 PM
@Origame - I am not trying to change opinions. Pointing out that the prince didn't have a lot going on for him in the original either.

You can not see this new version though. Stick to the masterpiece you think the original to be. Type as hard as you can on your Internet rants trying to convince people to not see this movie. I probably will see it regardless.

Have a nice day.

@AzorAhai - ...so you aren't trying to change my mind, yet stating there's something you wanna change my mind on 🙄

And I never said it was a masterpiece. Timeless? Yes. Classic? As any timeless story is. But that doesn't make it a masterpiece.

And dude, most of your comments here are longer than my replies, yet you tell me to type harder 🤣

@Origame - in the original grimm brothers story...snow white was 7...by all means, lets do the actual story...pedophilia sells...at least that's what a large unfortunate block of knuckleheads on this site believe

@soupysales - ...that's your argument? Dude, changing the age doesn't change the story.

But good job trying to paint us as pedophiles since we want it to at least keep the f@#$ing genre of a love story.

But since we're throwing this sh!t around, guess we can say you hate little people since you're approving of a movie that went out of its way to avoid casting little people in roles specifically designed for them, when those are very rare.
