just rewatched his movie the other day and appreciated it way more the second time. The third act is really creative and saves the movie for me

The 9th image (straight gold lines on the back of Strange's cape) would tie-in perfectly with The Vision's costume 'over-laid wiring' embroidering. Loved the film, loved the visual FX, probably inspired by 'Inception' and then adding 'cosmically'.

I still really don't understand the backlash they got for casting Tilda Swinton. They literally showed in the movie how Strange thought the old Asian guy was the ancient one, and if they had stuck with that they would have gotten backlash for the trope of the white guy going to Asia to be taught something from an old asian guy and then becoming the best there is. At least this was different and they put a woman as the most powerful sorcerer, most powerful person in the movie other than Dormammu. Explain how that would have been better?

@JustAChillFan - Its absurd. From all the movie studios Marvel has done the best with diversity. It took 100 years to make a movie like Black Panther and Marvel did it. It wasnt a shitty black SH movie it was an iconic one.

@JustAChillFan - There are two main components to “Whitewashing”... the cultural impact, and the jobs impact. I think it’s easy to rightly be upset about the cultural impact... depicting an important character or (especially) a historical figure as white when they were originally another race, or making an important event in history about a white character instead of the minorities at the heart of it does take something away from other cultures and such instances should be called out for it.

I don’t think that really applies to “Doctor Strange”, because the role of the ancient one is a pretty basic stereotype ... there are already plenty of examples of ancient Asian wise men in film... adding another is arguably doing more harm than good. Plus, it does make the fictional story of Doctor Strange seem like it’s attributing magic to Asians and then appropriating it for a white hero.

So really, the biggest knock on the film in terms of Whitewashing is just the jobs impact... some old Asian actor got screwed out of a role, and work in Hollywood is probably hard to come by. I get that as a complaint, but it’s a pretty personal complaint and hard to get too worked up over it, so people who make this their cause tend to lump all Whitewashing together to have a broader basis for their discussions.

@Chewtoy - Wise Asian men is def overplayed. Wise Asian women on the otherhand, they could have gone for so we got something rare other than the usual dragon lady or hypersexualized partner. They were also already on board with the gender swap so that wouldn't have been a stretch.

Oh well, I'll stick with Cap Georgiou for now.

I still like this movie, though it could have been much, much better if Derrickson went a little weirder, darker, and less comedic. The jokes really were unnecessary and didn't elevate the film like Thor: Ragnarok and GotG Vol. 1. Nonetheless, it was acted really well, and I liked Tilda's Ancient One. I wish we really got to see what she was capable of in a fight scene. Some of the best costumes in any Marvel film, second only to Black Panther in my opinion (got snubbed for an Oscar nom in that regard).

I enjoyed Doctor Strange but the first half had a been there done that feel. The second half where they just make it a bunch of fun action sequences though was thoroughly enjoyable even if light on narrative.
