CBM Assassin RETRO Reviews: Daredevil: Director's Cut

I am currently replacing some of my older CBM’s with Blu Rays. This is also causing me to take a second (or in most cases, 20th) look at these films. As I do so you will be getting some CBM Assasin RETRO – REVIEWS!

First in the line up is: DAREDEVIL: Director’s Cut

Now You Will Receive Us (Initial thoughts about the Film)

I’m one of those that remember this movie as being “not that bad”.
The biggest problem that this movie had was in how it was cast.

Veritas (How TRUE are they to the original Characters?)

The flaw of this film wasn’t in the presentation of the characters. There were no MAJOR changes to our beloved characters. They simply over did some things.

Matt’s Blindness/ abilities - They really made Matt a bit of a cartoon.

EXAMPLES:
The scene in the courtroom Matt is looking for a sympathetic jury by stumbling around.
The “Water Tomb” that Matt has to sleep in to keep the noise out.
All these things really dumb down the character in my opinion.

Aeuquitas (Did they do the Characters JUSTICE?)

To some extent I would say they did a decent job of showing us a live action version of the characters we love. To be honest, I think this movie was made before it’s time. I remember all of the heat this movie got when it came out. Whether it was the costume changes (or lack of costume in Bullseye’s case), Kingpin being black, or reimaginings on many different levels… fans were furious!
Fast forward to today. We can no longer log onto CBM.com without seeing news about what Christopher Nolan is doing and how he is reimagining beloved characters with great success.

I mean, really is this

A bigger stretch than this?

I think Daredevil made some appearance changes based on what would be a better looking film. For the most part I think they achieved that.

The flaws I found as far as giving justice to the characters were two fold:

Matt Murdock – This character was completely drug down by Ben Affleck’s over acting.

Elektra – I have nothing against Jennifer Garner… she just didn’t nail the character for me. I don’t blame Garner for this… I blame the script.

Erin Go Brag (Biggest “facepalm” moment in the film)

I hate to be cliché or jump on the “hate train”… but the truth of the matter is; the worst part of this movie truly is Ben Affleck’s acting.
The absolute worst example of this is his overly dramatic dialog in his first court case (of the film) when he says: “I hope justice is found here today…(dramatic pause) for your sake…(overly dramatic pause) before justice finds you.”

In Nomne Patri, Et fili, et Spiritus Sancti (Closing thoughts on the Film)

I don’t think that this film will ever make anyone’s top ten list. However, all in all I don’t think it was the pile of crap that we remember it being.
I honestly think that this movie could have been saved by a decent sequel. Unfortunately we got a half @$$ed Elektra movie instead.

And because of that failure we can watch it every once in a while for old times sake but unfortunately the trigger has been pulled on this one a long time ago. So, we as fans are forced to lean over and watch as the good, bad and the ugly ooze out of its bullet wounds… place pennies over its eyes and walk away.
