Escape from New York (2013)

Axelbratoski casts the remake of the awesome 80s classic Escape from New York!

"What is Escape from New York?"

Escape from New York is a 1981 American cyberpunk action film co-written, co-scored and directed by John Carpenter. He co-wrote the screenplay with Nick Castle. The film is set in the near future in a crime-ridden United States that has converted Manhattan Island in New York City into a maximum security prison. Ex-soldier Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is given 24 hours to find the President of the United States, who has been captured after the crash of Air Force One.

Escape From New York

Written and Directed by Neil Marshall

Neil has directed some impressive films like The Descent, Centurion and Doomsday, the later being heavily inspired by Escape of New York. He knows how to blend action, science-fiction and violence in one film and make it good. I considered directors like Ben Affleck, Neveldine/Taylor and Zack Snyder but his talent and experience with this kind of films made him the better choice.

Music by Robin Coudert aka ROB

He isn't really well known, but his soundtrack for the horor film Maniac is terrific and really Carpenter-esque, and that's what made me choose him over the likes of Daft Punk and Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross. In case you haven't seen the film/listened to the soundtrack, here's a track that has that Escape from New York vibe.

Tom Hardy as Snake Plissken

This man is a badass, talented and versatile actor who, at this point of his career, is a no-brainer for this role. Tom has the look and build to be an ex-soldier, he has martial arts knowledge after Warrior and he is just one inch shorter than Kurt Russell, he is THE perfect choice! I'm absolutely proud of this pick.

Liam Neeson as Hauk

Liam is an amazing, tough actor who just fits fine as the hard-edged, no-nonsense Police Commissioner Hauk, having played a similiar character in The A-Team. I considered other actors like Bruce Greenwood, Ed Harris and Bruce Willis but when Neeson came to my mind I realised he would be just ideal!

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as The Duke of New York

I have seen people suggesting Terry Crews for this role, but I don't think he is a very good actor, and I've also seen Idris Elba, but he is too good for this role. Then, I settled up on Adewale, who I liked as Mr Eko in Lost. He is a very good actor and pretty big, standing "only" at 6'2". Due to his tall frame, powerful-looking phyisque and deep voice, he often plays sinister, imposing characters of criminal or military backgrounds, so this role fits him perfectly.

Tom Wilkinson as The President of the United States

Yes, I know he isn't American, but Donald Pleasence wasn't either so it doesn't really matter. This great actor, who you may know from Batman Begins, has the acting chops and right look to be memorable in this relatively small but important part.

Sam Rockwell as Brain

I love Sam as an actor. He is really underrated and versatile, this role wouldn't be hard for him, as he knows how to play a hateable genius with ease. He would be a really coll addition to this cast.

Rosario Dawson as Maggie

Dawson is a good actress who has the... physical attributes to play this small role. She has already played a tough but sexy woman in Sin City.

Brendan Gleeson as Cabbie

You need a great funny actor for the role of Cabbie and the very awesome Mr Gleeson came to my mind. He may be younger than the character in the film but he still fits nicely. This is a choice I really like.

Robert Maillet as Slag

I rewatched Sherlock Holmes recently and found his character similar to this one. Nothing really special, just that.
