VIDEO GAMES: Tron Online
Okay, I'm going to admit, this isn't a fully fleshed out idea so far. But I have the basic framework, and I'm gonna keep working on it!
An idea for an MMO based on Tron
So basically, the idea is for an MMO or MMORPG (depending on how you define RPG) based on the Tron universe. Try to keep up with me, because a lot of what will make this game work will depend
on some things that most casual fans don't know about the world of Tron. All of the information I'm using comes straight from the world of Tron. You can find all of it at tron.wikia.com
The basic premise is this: players create their own "Program" that lives in Tron City. The initial structure of the game follows that of most MMOs. You pick a race, or in this case a type of Program, and then a class. Like most MMOs, certain types of Programs will gain certain buffs and debuffs with certain classes. Some builds will work better than others, because it's only natural that way.
For instance, in World of Warcraft, Night Elves make great Hunters because of their natural affinity for nature and agility.
In "Tron Online", certain types of Programs will work better with different classes.
The types of Programs are as follows:
NOTE: I UNDERSTAND THAT ISOS ARE NOT PROGRAMS. FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, THEY ARE CALLED PROGRAMS IN THIS OUTLINE.
The Arjians are heavily philosophical programs. Founded upon literal teachings of the Grid's creator, Kevin Flynn. United by a common goal to one day access the mystical haven beyond the Grid supposedly inhabited by users known as the "real world".
Arjian society is structured as a peaceful theocracy beneath their spiritual leader, the oracle Radia. It is the only known community openly comprised of both Basics and ISOs reside primarily in the crystalline metropolis of Arjia City, however all Arjians were killed during Clu's purge. The Arjian society is rumored to still exist in small groups, comprised only of Basics however, that still secretly hold to the teachings of Radia.
Basics are user-created programs with clearly defined directives for operation or functions. They operate within a strictly regimented class system, determined by priority ranking within it. With some exceptions, they are not able to adapt or change beyond boundaries set by their user-issued directives.
The Bostrimites are a faction of disenfranchised ISOs seeking asylum from purported xenophobic abuse.
The majority of its members relocated from City Core to the remote Outlands, desiring existence free from interference or influence of rival Basics. Egalitarian society governed by an advisory council, as selected democratically by general population.
Prone to aggressive self-modification in order to better survive the harsh conditions in the Outlands as well as to further delineate themselves from other programs.
Bostrumites primarily resided in Bostrum Colony, and had green circuitry, distinguishing them from the other ISOs.
Isomorphic Algorithms (better known as ISOs) are a race of programs that spontaneously evolved on the Grid, as opposed to being created by users. Their existence is considered a miracle by Kevin Flynn; however, Clu 2 considers them to be an obstruction in his mission to create the perfect system.
As you can see, there is plenty room for expansion in the universe of Tron, and it can all fit into the game. Of course, much of the game will take place before Tron: Legacy and Clu's purge. All of the information you need to know is on the Tron Wikia.
Anyway, on with the explanation. After players choose a "Race", they choose a class. The classes are also based on Tron, and certain Programs that are seen in the movies and games. They are as follows:
-User/Neutral programs – Blue, or White
*All ISOs fall under this class by default
*Arjians gain a bonus when using this class
*Jack of all Trades class
*Gain bonus if upgraded to System Monitor
-Non User Programs – Red
*The “Horde” of Tron Online
-Hacker Programs – Yellow
*Basics can learn to control Viruses when using this class
-Military Programs – Green
*Bostrumites are typically Military class
So you're probably wondering...what do you do in the game? Well, here is a list of things that players can do in the game.
-Players live in Tron City, compete on The Grid
-Players can complete quests that fall both within and outside of story canon
-All quests and story precede Tron: Legacy, and before the purge
When the player reaches a certain point, they will participate in the purge. This is the “final quest”. After completing this quest, the player's program will be “Restored to a previous version”. This is the equivalent of maxing out their character. After doing this, they will gain access to special outfits, legendary items and equips, and exclusive PVP sessions.
-Player versus Player:
While not in neutral areas, like:
*The Arena (not participating)
*Players can participate in PVP in a number of ways.
**The Outlands is in a constant state of PVP. It's every man or woman for themselves. Players can work together, or fight to survive. This opens the possibility for Clans and factions.
*Similar to dungeons
*Can be anything from clearing out viruses, to quests based on the movies or other games
If you're not convinced, then I don't know how to convince you. The way I see it, it would work perfectly. Most likely, it would be a good F2P (free to play) game, but hey, who knows? Once again, I am still working on this idea. Let me know what you think!
Plus, just think about the Daft Punk soundtrack. It would be playing in the game 24/7!
