Can we get a transcript of Whedon's remarks for those of us who can't watch videos at work?

Once again, thank you Joss Whedon for The Avengers! Can't wait till TA2 comes out. Can't believe that it starts shooting next year.

Don't know if I mentioned this but I love Spidey's new costume.

Mangold, still waiting on the trailer.

Exactly. And that's a fact.

Mangold needs to grab Fox by the throat and tell them to give us a trailer already.

Hope that The Wolverine is as good as I think it is going to be, and Spidey's new costume does look pretty cool, think it is the eyes mostly

I'd say that's an understament. I love Webb, Nolan, Favreau, Singer and Branagh, but I don't think any of them have the same grasp and understanding of the genre like Joss does.

Has anyone else noticed that they have redesigned Wolverines claws?

Find the HQ version of the 'Suited Wolverine' pic & zoom in on the claws

The adamantium claws still have a bone-like shape to them.

Maybe someone can post a pic.

NOMIS

I think he's talking about the COMIC BOOK MOVIE genre seeing as how Whedon is a critically acclaimed comic book writer and is the fan at that, which is ALWAYS a plus.

The Avengers was a fun movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it lacked depth. The Dark Knight Rises was a far better piece of cinema in my opinion that really got under the Batman's skin. But to be fair, Joss had 6 heroes to deal with instead of one. Looking forward to A2 though.

@ Nomis: the difference between the directors you listed and Whedon is that those directors did more of "interpretations" of the characters while Whedon did more of as direct "translation" from page to screen as possible (while still working with the films that came before). It doesn't take anything away from the talent the other guys have but it's somewhat of an apples-to-orenges type of situation. That being so, I think that Whedon is, thus far, (just about) unequaled in successfully pulling a comic off the pages and onto the big screen. The only other director that I can think of who has been able to do that is Robert Rodriguez with Sin City. I just hope to see more of that quality, combined with fidelity to the source material in the coming years - and yes, I'm looking at you Bryan Singer!!!

you just take the best pieces of your favorite cb universe, wrap it up nicely and you have your script done ... Add to the mix some great casting choices, an extraordinary director with a powerful vision, supportive execs producers, supportive chief of the studio, some cool CGI effects and you got yourself a hit. Critically Acclaimed BOX OFFICE HIT.

EASY AS PIE

I was expecting the avengers to be good but it exceeded my hopes.

@ Nomis: yeah, I'm not saying major reinterpretation it doesn't work sometimes- afterall, I think Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are both top notch CBMs as well as excellent cinema despite MAJOR changes from the source material (didn't really care for TDKR but that another discussion - LOL) just that films like The Avengers, which was much closer to the comics (sure, there's always a bit of interpretation as it is often necessary to make things work), have a special place since it's not all that common and the important thing is that whoever is doing them, has the right grasp on the material and talent to bring it out in a movie.

***I'd say that Zack Snyder is another one who has made things work with 300 and Watchmen.***

Unfortunately, it's all too common that filmmakwrs are chosen who have neither the grasp on the material -

Michael Bay

talent -

Tim Story

or both --

...whoever the hell made Jonah Hex...

But to sum it up, it's just nice to see a filmmaker or two who does truly understand both!

Zack Snyder is definitely a director who understands and appreciates comics/graphic novels. Watchmen was, except for the ending (which I liked better than the original giant purple psychic squid), an incredible achievement in translating the comic to the screen -- he was, if anything, too accurate such that anyone who did not read the graphic novel was left a bit confused.

I thought Joss got the Avengers exactly right in tone, style and writing. He made a highly entertaining film that translated the characters to the movie screen with as much from the comic books as could be.

Nolan did a great job with his Batman series, but he revised the character to fit his vision and to tell the story and themes he wanted to tell -- he turned Batman into his character. Whedon took Marvel's characters and put them into a movie story, but they stayed Marvel's characters.
thewonderer
thewonderer - 3/4/2013, 9:30 AM
Whedon understands fantastic action and humor, but neglected character, story, drama, and focus on The Avengers.

No one will ever tackle the genre perfectly, because every director lacks in some place.

So no Whedon is not even close to understanding the genre. Superheroes are more than comedy or action.
thewonderer
thewonderer - 3/4/2013, 9:37 AM
And localman, Nolan fit Batman into his vision sure but translated the brilliant comic stories into his films as well, which Marvel never bothers to do. Why not adapt the brilliant comic stories, Marvel?

And we get an Iron Man who can't sleep at night because he saved the world and needs another inspiration to save the world (guess Yinsens sacrifice only applies for 2 movies :/), a Cap whose entire focus is on how funny it is that all his friends are dead, a Thor whose barely given character with a brief mention of his love interest and then made fun of for the rest of the time, and Hulk who was actually damn well represented to be honest.

Oh and what do we sacrifice the above for? Black Widow and Hawkeye romance.

Don't even get me started on Hawkeye character completely destroyed.

Gag
thewonderer
thewonderer - 3/4/2013, 9:45 AM
@RobertGriffin

Tell me how Hawkeye mind controlled 3/4ths of the film is "capturing the essence and personalities perfectly"

Tell me how Loki being a complete slave pussy with a stupid plan and horrible mind is "capturing the essence and personalities perfectly" Loki is cocky, but not stupid enough to completely be defenseless against the Hulk, WHO HE KNOWS GAVE HIS BROTHER TROUBLE. THE BROTHER WHO TOOK HIM DOWN IN THE FIRST MOVIE!!!!!

Tell me how 5 seconds of a circle shot on Captain America in the final battle is capturing the sad loneliness and dramatic struggle Caps going through. Whedons response to this? LOL lets just call him capsicle. Why was the deleted scene cut out?

Tell me why any of these heroes needs an inspiration to work together. Because they feel like they don't need help and can save the world on their own? Well okay then, but why not show them all losing horrifically (thereby adding a dramatic moment here) and then only winning when maybe by accident an assist leads to success. Fade this into the final battle and bam fantastic.

Instead, we get a meaningless Coulson death that's being retconned. Way to go Marvel.

Don't even get me started on Maria Hill and Thor shittyness.

I really commend Marvel studios for picking Whedon, in Hollywood, it's typical to just pick out some director who just got a good movie out. If it were other studios, everything would have been turned to crap.

Stark is always the comic relief. And everyone had their funny lines too but Stark does most of it.
