In April,
Toby Kebell landed the villainous role of
Doctor Doom (Victor von Doom) in Josh Trank's
The Fantastic Four reboot. Since then, we've only seen a leaked image of the pre-CGI suit. Today, Kebell sat down with
Collider to discuss his wonderful motion-captured performance in 20th Century Fox's
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and to share some surprising details about his character's origin in
The Fantastic Four.
Kebell On Doom's New Origin:
He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story. And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that. The Doom in ours—I’m a programmer. Very anti-social programmer. And on blogging sites I’m “Doom”.
On Doom's Voice:
I’m excited to see it too, and my nerves really…The only thing I can tease you about is what I worked on most was the voice because nobody—even in the cartoons, when I was watching them I was like, “So where’s he from?” There’s a mild change and I’ll tell you because of our history.
On The Tone:
Yeah, it was cool man. Josh, the whole deal, the lo-fi way he did it, the ultra-real. It was just nice to do that. It was nice to be feeling like we had to come to terms with what was given by this incident.
Significant departures from the source material usually don't go over that well with comic book fans, but they have to understand characters from the Silver Age will need a modern update. Heck, when Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the character in 1962 they didn't even know what his backstory was. It would take them two years until they began to flesh that out.
Clearly, director Josh Trank isn't worried about distancing his reboot from the source material. Let's just hope when the film comes out next year there is enough of the source in it that we still recognize it as
The Fantastic Four.
FANTASTIC FOUR directed by Josh Trank ("Chronicle") from a story and screenplay by Jeremy Slater and Simon Kinberg ("X-Men: Days of Future Past"). Kate Mara ("House of Cards") as Invisible Woman/Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan ("Chronicle") as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Jamie Bell ("Billy Elliot") as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Miles Teller ("Divergent") as Reed Richards /Mr. Fantastic, Tim Blake Nelson ("O Brother, Where Art Thou?") as Harvey Elder/Mole Man and Toby Kebbell as Dr. Doom.
