RUMOR: Plot Details & Directors On The Shortlist For The New STAR WARS Trilogy RUMOR: Plot Details & Directors On The Shortlist For The New STAR WARS Trilogy

A blog that reported three years ago that George Lucas was planning on making Star Wars: Episodes VII, VIII, and IX has new information about the sequels and a list of directors that Disney is supposedly interested in. Hit the jump to check it out.

In 2009 Jim Dorey of the blog, Marketsaw, had an anonymous source contact him and claimed that Lucasfilm were already working on Star Wars: Episodes VII, VIII & IX. And just a short while ago that same anonymous source provided more information about the planned sequels which you can check out in full here, or you can read the key points below. Some of them condensed by Bleeding Cool.

  • Luke Skywalker is a primary focus, as are many of the original trilogy cast (Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, C3PO and R2D2). Disney also realised that George Lucas and STAR WARS are one and the same, so George will certainly have a voice on any angle taken, in fact I believe it's one of many stipulations. However he will no longer have creative control,

  • I don't believe the empire was completely destroyed by the end of Return of the Jedi.

  • Mark Hamill is a certainty.

  • There are two trilogies planned, all following an original overview by Lucas, which was always planned as a multi generational saga. Movies 10 - 12 are from my understanding about the offspring of the Skywalkers, set many years later with the surviving cast playing much older versions of themselves and featuring a female protagonist named Skywalker.

  • The movies from what I understand will adopt the Harry Potter model, and will be aggressively brought to the forefront of popular entertainment once again with consistent installments.

  • Rewritten from previously secret drafts from way back during the making of the original trilogy. The main problem was the age of the cast, and the tone of the story. You will see a tone more in line with the original trilogy, and specifically featuring that cast

  • Live action TV show - The scripts already written will be absorbed in some way into a TV format. Basically they are 45 minute long feature films. With concepts that are very ambitious and the fact that it focuses on characters that are not known and are completely different to what people may have in mind about a STARWARS TV show.

  • Disney are “all over” restoring the original trilogy.

This mysterious source also lists the names of some directors that were being “bandied about” – Steven Spielberg, Neill Blomkamp, Alfonso Cuaron, Matthew Vaughn, Darren Aronofsky and Joss Whedon.

Interesting Choices for directors.

Joss would be cool, but he'll probably be too busy with overlooking the MCU. Out of that list of directors, I'd say go with Neill Blomkamp.

Here's the more important question. Will John Williams return?

Spielberg was actually supposed to direct Return of the Jedi back in the 80s but had to drop out. It would be great to see him come back for Episode VII...

Dane Dehaan would be way better for Jacen Solo imo. I would have loved to see him as Anakin in the Prequels.

By " restoring ", do they mean the going back to what made the original trilogy epic for these new films or meaning they are gonna " restore " the orginals on DVD with no Special Edition stuff added on to it?

Since they have Whedon on contract they could take him off Avengers and put him on Star Wars if he would prefer SW

@Wormwood Do you mean you WANT Lucas back???... I kid, I haven't really seen any of the films fully except A New Hope.

That said, I'm glad to see Disney taking this seriously with their choice of directors, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see that I wasn't off the mark when I thought Alfonso Cuaron might be a good choice.

I just hope they don't disregard the EU completely.

If those key points are true, then the happiest person in the world right now is Mark Hamill.

Anyone but Arronofsky. Please don't let that pretincious filmmaker get his hands on Star Wars. I'm fine with all the others, could make for some fun interesting films.

I'm sure Whedon, Spielberg, and/or Vaughn would be awesome, but they've got Avengers 2 & SHIELD, Tintin sequels, and The Secret Service to deal with already.

Still wouldn't mind seeing Neil Blompkamp tackling Star Wars after Elysium and/or a District 9 sequel.

and to the inevitable comments about hammil:

luke skywalker growing older is not some otherworldly concept. hamill obviously won't be playing a teenager in this. and yeah sure, he can work out to look somewhat fit, but he doesn't need to be a cut like the old days to still look fine. he's playing a jedi (the force, lightsaber), not jackie chan.

Disney is smart for wanting to use the Skywalker & Solo names/characters in next films.
People really identify & want more from them..not original actors, too old..need new blood.

Now when they say "restore", are they saying that the originals will be released as it was originally made without the added nonsense. If so, thank you disney, that would be so awesome. And rerelease them with the original half face video covers from before, those were the best

I love Spielberg but 1. I don't think he will touch a Star Wars movie cause he is to close friend with Lucas 2. If he did that's bad for us fans cause Lucas will be able to manipulate him. And 3. Spielbergs sci fi films are too clean. They don't look lived in. Like the original movies. Neil blomkamp is my first choice. That dude is a great storyteller and has a gorgous artistic eye. I can't it for his new flick. My friend is working on it and he says it looks amazing.
