Fox wrestled control of Fantastic Four away from director Josh Trank in 2015, but when one fan suggested a #ReleaseTheTrankCut campaign, the filmmaker responded with a simple statement: "No need."

Fantastic Four was released in 2015, but everything director Josh Trank had planned for the movie went out of the window after Fox decided to reshoot most of it. This led to an uneven tone, a ridiculous wig, and a major box office flop. It's thought that Simon Kinberg might have been behind those reshoots, but perhaps he got his comeuppance with Dark Phoenix!

With Zack Snyder's Justice League getting a release on HBO Max, there's been a great deal of chatter about other superhero movies that have been ruined by studio execs, including Suicide Squad (#ReleaseTheAyerCut) and, believe it or not, Fantastic Four (#ReleaseTheTrankCut).

When a fan suggested it was time to start campaigning for the latter, Trank issued a short and simple response: "No need." At this stage, it seems the filmmaker has moved on, and that's evident from his new film, Capone (which recently grossed over $2.5 million on VOD platforms).

Trank has talked openly about Fantastic Four's failings in recent months, including in a recent interview with CBM's own Josh Wilding which you can read HERE. In that, he talks about taking control of his future filmmaking endeavours after the difficult time he had working with Fox.

Good, because we don't want it.

@FinnishDude - I would like to see it, but to Tranks point...it prob wont be the film fans want anyway. Just like we wont know if Snyders JL is going to be any better than the Whedon ver.

I genuinely believe he could have made a great F4 film... I still have no idea how that one turned out so bad.

Also, can’t wait for that X-Men/Gambit/F4 crossover. It should be here any day now...

I read somewhere that he was going to bring Galactus back, but in black leather this time.

Director and studio agreed on a vision, studio got cold feet and tried to change it, director and studio clashed, final film was an incomplete mess. I think that summarizes it.

I'm actually pretty interested in this cut. I feel like, if nothing else, Trank's had a lot of interesting ideas for this film, which is pretty antithetical to Snyder's JL plans, and a strong cast. The final result was an absolute shit-show, but this could have been cool.

@tmp3 - Zero chance it would've been the ideal F4 film, but a very body horror film with F4 elements could've turned out pretty interesting at the very least.

Probably still wouldn't have rooted for it all that much, but mainly because I'm just longing for a more traditional approach to marvels first family

There was a lot of freakish sci-fi stuff in the early Stan Lee comics where the FF viewed themselves as monsters and had to come to terms with their powers. Trank's vision was also taking inspiration from the brilliant Ultimate Fantastic Four run. It wouldn't have been the light-hearted straight page-to-film adaptation that we're probably going to get with the MCU, but I was interested to see Josh Trank's vision before the film came out and I figured out how badly the behind-the-scenes drama [frick]ed everything up.

Even if Trank's version was mediocre, it wouldn't have been the incomplete mess we ended up with.

He couldn't if he wanted to. And he just likes talking up a big arrogant game.

Judging from the first 30 minutes of Fantastic Four I think it could've been quite an solid movie. But since Marvel is probably already working on a reboot there is indeed no need

@MalseMarcel - I mean, WB is working on a Batman reboot. No need for Snyder Cut either 🤷‍♂️

@tmp3 - well, on one hand you Marvel, which is smart, and on the other you have WB, which is... WB.

bkmeijer2 - 5/23/2020, 4:41 AM
@tmp3 - Thats true, but they're probably not working on another Justice League. Added to that is that there is still an interest in these versions of Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Superman

Look whilst I wanted to see the Snyder JL i really hope we aren’t going to have endless demand for random cuts of films now. I’m all for studios keeping there noses out a directors vision but it’s a Slippery slope

Let’s say the Trank cut is going to be released at some point in the future. First, it would need to (re)build enough traction. Then it would need approval from... Disney- because, remember, Fox isn’t in charge anymore. Now, I’m kind of guessing with this whole process, but when does that put this thing being released? That’s right, 2021 or 2022. Maybe even 2023. And if speculation is correct, that lines up with the Marvel Studios reboot, meaning they release around the same time. Which one do we see doing better?

No need, indeed.

Disney owns Fantastic Four film rights now. Even if Josh Trank wanted a redo on his film, no way is that company going to invest money into a past project that will basically amount to nothing. Marvel Studios plans for Fantastic Four IS the redo for the franchise.

The people that wanna see "Trank's version" because "The first half was good!" confuse the hell out of me. No, it [frick]ing wasn't. This movie is a piece of shit from beginning to end.
OmegaDaGrodd
OmegaDaGrodd - 5/23/2020, 7:27 AM
The big difference between Trank and Snyder/Ayer is that Trank seemed to be fully aware that he was making the antithesis of an FF movie and just wanted to do his own thing. Snyder thought he was making the "true" version and Ayer didn't know what the hell he was doing (and only had 6 weeks to write the script for that confusion) so while they were all "robbed", their fans think they were robbed of completely different things when in reality they were all just prevented from releasing their bad versions of a bad movie

Disney, release George Lucas' episodes VII-IX on Disney +. Either as a live-action series or an animated series, I don't care, but just release them.
