We first met The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powers' Halbrand at sea after Galadriel encountered him and fellow survivors on a raft in the Sundering Seas. It's since become clear that there was more to him than meets the eye, with the latest episode culminating with the soldier being introduced to the villagers of Tirharad as the rightful King of the Southlands.

Galadriel hopes he will be the one to rally the Southlands behind her cause to find and destroy every last trace of Sauron. Halbrand is clearly reluctant but did prove himself a hero last week, only to have any celebrations cut short when Orodruin erupted, transforming that mountain, and his home, into Mount Doom and Mordor.

Seeing as Halbrand was created specifically for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, there's been a lot of speculation about who he might really be.

Sauron is one popular theory, but an eagle-eyed fan may have figured out what's really in store for him after watching that latest episode. In The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the King of the Dead originally served and worshipped Sauron before swearing allegiance to the realm of Gondor and its then King, Isildur.

After making an oath to fight on Isildur's side when needed, he failed to appear during the War of the Last Alliance and was cursed, resulting in him and his followers not being allowed to rest until their oath had been fulfilled. Years later, Aragorn found and freed them, but what leads us to believe the King of the Dead is Halbrand?

Well, as you can see in the video below, his armour matches what the King of the Dead is adorned in, and this does make sense based on how the story is playing out. Halbrand is clearly an unwilling participant in this war - with a dark past - so him ultimately turning his back on Isildur and being cursed would be a fitting, albeit tragic, end to his story.

Let us know your thoughts on this theory in the comments section, and stay tuned for more on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

If he is Sauron then poor writing.

He has been shown as being reluctant when he is in a room with only a nameless guard. Tossing off his necklace. Only to then have a change of heart and pick it up.

No reason for the villain to contemplating not being the villain.

I do like the King of the Dead theory.

But use some creative license. Have his betrayal of Isildur more complicated. Not a simple selfish betrayal…but something he felt he needed to do for another reason.

@IronGenesis - Sauron was repentant post Morgoth and there are about 200 years where he's unaccounted for. This is from Tolkiens letter. Halbrand is 100 percent their Sauron. The showrunners were even quoted as saying at this point in the timeline Sauron is "just a guy".

I like the theory, but I'm not sure the two armors look that much alike.

The armor doesn't look that similar at all, and Rings of Power is not bound by the costume design of Lord of the Rings. That said, it's not an uncompelling theory; would rather he's the Witch King though. That would be a more tragic arc.

I'm quietly liking the show for what it is. That's the only way to really say it, I mean at times there seems to be events that we know and could lead to something, but then I remember the licensing and chances of that being shown are slim.

I like this theory though, I mean at least it would be something about this show that could actually be fitted and make sense.
But I think the Witch King theory is a little more romantically tragic for what their trying to build this character into.

So, in case he turns out being Sauron; how exactly would that play out? I mean, is he just playing dumb? Would he be somehow "possesed" by Sauron or something magically similar? (I believe this might not be in the books at all) Context: I haven't read ANY of the books but watched all movies. :P

It leaked Halbrand is Sauron from same leaker who first told us Galadriel would be bullied by kids in first scene of show. His entire leak has been spot on.

Definitely not the king of the dead. he was from a different area. sauron was great smith, and halbrand dove at that while in numenor. all signs point to sauron at this point.

He's 100% Sauron. These writers are not talented and are pushing agendas in their writing. So they will ship Sauron and Galadriel andhe will break bad because he either didn't listen to her "brilliant" thoughts and ideas or she will break his heart.
