Next year, Stephen Colbert, the host of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report will replace David Letterman as the host of CBS' Late Show. Hopefully when he switches networks he won't lose that geeky humor that we all know and love, even though he'll have to drop his faux right-wing persona. On last night's episode, Colbert conducted an epic interview with Smaug the dragon from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy. The character is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch ("Star Trek Into Darkness") in the films and he actually did provide the voice for this special segment as well. Check it out below.

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

By now everyone knows my stance on these Hobbit movies.

But man...I saw this earlier and I can easily say that, with absolutely no exaggeration whatsoever, this interview is the best thing to ever come out of these movies. Bar none. Just a hilarious little 'interview'.

And I'd like to think Benedict Cumberbatch is poking a little fun at Peter Jackson's changes from the book with all the talk about not reading the book and not knowing who Tolkien is haha.

I saw this last night... Was surprised at how long it took to show up here. I mean, more Smaug is a good thing. This was pretty damn impressive, and funny... But I have to wonder how much it cost to do it!

Because Colbert had a replica of Cap's shield on the wall for the entire run of his show. Colbert is one of us - a true geek.
