Comic Book History

Who is STAR SAPPHIRE?
CAROL FERRIS is one of the many characters who has used the name STAR SAPPHIRE, and is a long-time love interest of Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern of sector 2814. She was created by John Broome & Gil Kane, and as STAR SAPPHIRE by Robert Kanigher & Lee Elias. The character first appeared in Showcase #22.
First Appearance

CAROL FERRIS appearing as STAR SAPPHIRE for the first time in Green Lantern Vol 2 #16

CAROL FERRIS was Ferris Aircraft's Vice President, daughter of the owner of the company. She hired Hal Jordan and quickly found herself attracted to the fearless test pilot, who was secretly the superhero Green Lantern. However, the young couple’s romance quickly became complicated when Carol took over the company from her father and the Zamarons crowned her the new STAR SAPPHIRE. When the Zamarons discovered that she was in love with Green Lantern, a servant of their estranged friends, the Guardians of the Universe, they sent her to defeat Green Lantern in battle as STAR SAPPHIRE.

In Green Lantern: Secret Origin storyline Carol's history was retconned. In this retelling, Carol met Hal when they were eight, as they watched Hal's test pilot father crash to his death.

Over the years, the guilt over what had happened ate away at Carol's father, eventually driving him to sickness, forcing Carol to give up her dream of being a pilot, and take over as CEO of Ferris Air. When Hal, who had hated Carol's dad for what had happened, discovered the truth, he and Carol found solace in each other's grief. However, their relationship is stifled by Carol's refusal to date employees

Another complication in their romance was Carol being possessed by the STAR SAPPHIRE. Every time it happened, she was forced to fight Hal in his guise as the Green Lantern. No matter how many times it happened, the Green Lantern was able to free Carol from the power of the STAR SAPPHIRE.

After many years, Carol once again was endowed with the power of the STAR SAPPHIRE. Unlike previous transformations that caused her to fight the Green Lantern, Carol was to assist the STAR SAPPHIRE Corps in preparing for the Blackest Night prophecy.

CAROL FERRIS as STAR SAPPHIRE, returned to Zamaron in time to battle the former Green Lantern Sinestro who now has his own corps with yellow "fear" power rings. Sinestro's Corps was in Zamaron to reclaim their captured female comrades.

Unlike the other STAR SAPPHIREs and her previous incarnation, Carol is now resisting the influence of the Zamaron's STAR SAPPHIRE's power now in the form similar to the Green Lantern's ring. She was free to act of her own accord, since she had apparently built up a resistance from her previous transformations. As such, Queen Aga'po suspected that Carol might be the perfect STAR SAPPHIRE, able to tame the sentient embodiment of love, the Predator.
CAROL FERRIS with the Love Entity - Predator

When Carol in her STAR SAPPHIRE guise came face to face again with Green Lantern Hal Jordan, she informed him that she is now in control.

Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Carol possesses no inherent superhuman powers. However, when possessed by the STAR SAPPHIRE gem, she exhibits:

Superhuman Strength
Superhuman Speed
Superhuman Stamina
Superhuman Agility
Superhuman Durability
Supersonic Flight
Immunity to Harsh Environments.

Energy Projection The jewel can be used to fire blasts of Zamoran energy or create weapons such as projectiles of them. If the user wishes, they can alter the form of the blasts.

Energy Constructs The jewel can form constructs of Zamoran energy. Virtually anything can be created depending on the user. If simulating a being, the user can direct the construct. Feedback occurs if a construct is destroyed, but this is usually a minor issue.

Message to the CBM community:
To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not, please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. Has anyone else noticed that a lot less people have been using Green Lantern movie avatars for the last couple days.

Don't get me wrong I'm as dissapointed as everyone else that it sucked, but hasn't it been kinda obvious for a few months now, that things were just... off about the direction that things were going?

My God this comic is retarded, no wonder it's a flop! Can't believe they revisited a concept this stupid and corny so many times over so many years and people still buy it with REAL MONEY!

The plotline was weak... not enough time was spent fleshing out characters, plotholes....bla bla. I was expecting a horrible film, but it was not bad. I wouldn't go see it again, but it was better than ...say... ghostrider.
SugarYumYum
SugarYumYum - 6/18/2011, 7:01 PM
Lively wasn't bad, she was just a miscast for the character. I couldn't take her seriously at all. She looked like a teenager playing a woman twice her age and had zero on set chemistry with Reynolds (and he usually does very well with female co-leads to feed off of). If she really hated the experience so much, then she can skip the sequels. They can certainly find someone better.

Another good article, Pollmaster. As someone who hasn't had the chance to check out the comics yet, these are really informative and interesting to read.

@thewolfx - lol, you obviously need your "whine" with your "Cheese"
golden123
golden123 - 6/18/2011, 7:20 PM
@Ceejay: That was a bad way to present that joke. It works best when you say, "do you want cheese with that whine?" or vice versa.
Ceejay
Ceejay - 6/18/2011, 7:30 PM
@golden123 - No, it's all in the context which in this case is based on already having the "Cheese" ala Star Sapphire.

my GL avatar isnt goin away.... however it was an avatar from the actual movie it would be removed lol. never been this disappointed about a movie much less anything else like i was yesterday after seeing GL. Blake Lively was not the worst part of the movie by anymeans though. she was decent, yet ill admit there was too much time/scenes spent on her relation ship with hal. she was freakin hot though.

btw way the musical score for this movie was CRAP!!!! sounded awful and cliche and nowhere near epic at all!!
OnLeatherWings
OnLeatherWings - 6/18/2011, 10:33 PM
@froggy your right. the cast was fine. it was the editing and horrible script that brought it down. soooo much wasted potential with this film.

btw ill be complaining about this film till the day i die
Goliath93
Goliath93 - 6/18/2011, 10:45 PM
This movie doesn't deserve a sequel, FRICK you WB, screw everyone involved in this movie. Especially the four hacks who wrote the script.

Did wb even bother to read the script, before they gave Campbell and a couple of tv writers 200 mil budget.

The only positive thing that came from this disaster of a movie was Grant Majors art, THAT'S IT

and btw saw GL......... if F4, Xmen 1, and Ghost Rider get sequels and Elektra gets a spin-off......GL gets a sequel. Jesus this isn't as good as DC can get (Dark Knight) but it damn sure isn't as BAD as it can get (Shaquille O'Neal STEEL Anyone?). GL is no award winner.......for best OR worst CBM!

I thought the movie was really good. I have little complaints about it. I don't understand why the reviews were so negative. I mean, I think that yes -- some parts of the story and editing could've been done better, but this movie was DEFINITELY better than Iron Man 2, and if its better than that, it certainly is STILL a start for DC to cough out more films. I'm sure this will get a sequel. I loved watching it... even though I'm not a fan of 3D, but oh well..
