BOX OFFICE: It's Official! GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Sets Record With $94.3M Debut
As it turns out, the estimates for Guardians of the Galaxy's opening weekend weren't all that far off as the James Gunn helmed movie ended up scoring a little over $94 million. That gives it the biggest August opening of all-time, and also the third highest debut of 2014...
So, the people who said that Guardians of the Galaxy would be Marvel Studios' first flop must be feeling mighty silly right about now, eh? These numbers put the James Gunn helmed movie behind only Transformers: Age of Extinction and Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the third highest debut of any 2014 release, easily topping both Godzilla and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (not to mention high profile sequel's like X-Men: Days of Future Past and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes).
This is a terrific result, and Guardians of the Galaxy's staying power will truly be tested next week when it faces off against the Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Whether it stays at #1 or not though, it's another hit for Marvel and announcing a sequel for 2017 at Comic-Con last week has really paid off! What do you guys think? Share your thoughts below!
