Brian Bendis On Reviving GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Despite STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

Speaking highly of the interstellar team's rising popularity, Marvel writer & movie consultant Brian Michael Bendis discusses whether Disney's new 2015 Star Wars movie affects Guardians of the Galaxy!

In spite of Marvel’s upcoming “space epic” and riskiest endeavor since assembling The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, the studios’ parent company Disney hotly acquired Lucasfilm and announced Star Wars: Episode VII will kickoff an all-new trilogy. Marvel comics writer & movie consultant, Brian Michael Bendis recently weighed in on the interstellar projects with SFX mag’.

“We first started talking about doing this years ago when it looked like there weren’t going to be any more Star Wars films,” he asserts, as a member of the House of Ideas’ Creative Committee. “It just shows that there must be something in the air. It’s one of those zeigeiest moments when everyone is thinking about the same thing. Marvel is thinking about how to make their space epic work & here comes the greatest space epic ever & from the same company. It’ll be fun!”

In light of the James Gunn-directed film and Marvel NOW! comic book series, which he is scripting with artist Steve McNiven, Brian Bendis says he’s not surprised by the growing popularity of Rocket Raccoon and the other Guardians. “There’s a lot of brainpower here, so it was like ‘let’s put them to work,” he said. “That’s why we’ve such a strong hit ratio and it’s why we’re light years ahead of where Warner Bros. is right now. They should do the same thing with Geoff Johns and their other guys. They might be in better shape if they did that. Fox have hired Mark Millar to do the same thing for them on X-Men and Fantastic Four. It works, so that’s exactly what you should do.”

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—the big cinematic event exploring an interstellar super hero team-up, featuring Marvel characters Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon. While story details are under wraps, the film is rumored to lead with a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants. Directed by James Gunn from a screenplay by James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014. In addition to “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel (title TBA) on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!
