It sounds like making the Aether one of the Infinity Stones in Thor: The Dark World may have been a last-minute decision on Marvel Studios's part after a recent reveal from JGOTG director ames Gunn!

By Nighthawk01 - Apr 08, 2020 07:04 AM EST

Captain America: The First Avenger introduced the Tesseract, while The Avengers included both that and the Mind Stone. The following year, we would see the Reality Stone (a.k.a. the Aether) in Thor: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy then brought the Power Stone to the MCU.

However, things could have been ever so slightly different based on some recent reveals from filmmaker James Gunn. During a live commentary which took place last night, Gunn said that the Infinity Stone used in his movie was red during shooting. That later changed in post-production when it was decided that The Dark World would establish the Aether as one of the powerful gems.

Gunn also told fans that Marvel Studios didn't have a final plan in place for the Infinity Stones when Guardians of the Galaxy was being shot in 2013, and it was only during post-production that Kevin Feige figured out when and where the Infinity Stones would start showing up.

Thor: The Dark World was released in November 2013, one month after Guardians wrapped, so Alan Taylor's frustrations with Marvel Studios could boil down to reshoots making some big changes.

Well......they made the right decision.

The fact that the reality stone is red made me think it was going to have some connection to the reality bending Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Heck, maybe it still does.

@comicfan100 - ...she got her powers from the mind stone.

@Origame - I know that... I'm just saying the reality stone and her powers may come from the same source, but the Mind Stone just unlocked her access to that source. You follow me?

@comicfan100 - that would be really confusing and make no sense. The reality stone was buried in a random part of the galaxy for thousands of years and was only on earth for that short period in thor 2 before the events of infinity war.

@Origame - Actually, it does. If she was a dormant mutant, it wouldn't matter where in the universe the reality stone is, as long as she had access to the same power source that stone got it's power from.

@comicfan100 -
Makes perfect sense to me. Basically like all of the infinity stones are connected and the mind stone just opened their mind up to that connection. Wanda’s power’s are reality based and red so she connected with the reality stone while quicksilver’s powers are blue and more connected to the space stone. I still kinda hope that the reason they were the only ones to survive the experiments is because they were actually mutants the whole time though. Who knows

@comicfan100 - ...the reality stone is the source.

comicfan100 - 4/8/2020, 8:58 AM
@Origame - The reality stone would be the conduit to a source, not the source itself.
Origame
Origame - 4/8/2020, 9:17 AM
@comicfan100 - but thats not how they are. The reality stone is reality in its purest form (just as the time stone is the time in its purest form). This is clarified in endgame that the infinity stones need to be in their respective timelines or they cause destruction since, you know, you're removing a fundamental part of existence from it.

@TheJustinHammer - well i watched the movies that explained them. Unless there's a massive retcon that also eliminates a major plot point of endgame, this is how it works.

Whatever. Purple does suit Guardians more than it would have anything else. Would be interesting the see a version of the films with the colours flipped.

@Nebula - would it REALLY be interesting to see the same films with 1 item in each movie as a different colour? I for one can guarantee that that's definitely not gonna make Thor: The Worst Thor and better 😂

@JacobKarr - *any
Nebula

@JacobKarr - Yes, I think it would be interesting. I said nothing about it making either film better or worse.

Gunn twice referring to the infinity stones as power stones shows how seriously some of us take these things sometimes.
Nebula

@OmegaBlack13 - Well it just makes communication less confusing when people refer to things properly. His tweet definitely confused me for a second.
Nebula

@OmegaBlack13 - Also, he calls them Infinity Stones here https://www.comicbookmovie.com/guardians_of_the_galaxy/guardians-of-the-galaxy-director-james-gunn-says-thanoss-cameo-was-an-extra-complication-a174424 so it was probably like a slip of the tongue or their actual names slipped his mind at the time.

I hate nitpicking, but that was one of the little changes that ruffled my britches a bit. The changes of the gems' color as well as the name change from "gems" to "stones." Just why?

Well Strucker should have used a fragment of the aether to Power Wanda and, the Space stone to power Pietro , Vision Made with the Mind Stone,.and Maybe the Power stone for Captain Marvel instead of the terseract.
