GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Director James Gunn Says He Had To Fight To Cast Dave Bautista As Drax GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Director James Gunn Says He Had To Fight To Cast Dave Bautista As Drax

Guardians of the Galaxy was former pro wrestler Dave Bautista's big break, and director James Gunn has admitted that casting him as Drax proved to be something of an uphill battle during pre-production!

Before Guardians of the Galaxy was released in theaters, many people suspected that the movie would be a box office flop. Revolving around an obscure group of characters and featuring an eclectic cast, the odds appeared to be stacked against the Marvel Comics adaptation, but it later proved to be a critical and commercial hit with $772 million at the worldwide box office!

One casting decision which had everyone up in arms was WWE wrestler Dave Bautista being chosen to play Drax the Destroyer. Future Aquaman Jason Momoa was initially offered the role, but declined after Marvel Studios refused to pay him what he wanted.

Despite doubts about a pro wrestler making his leap to Hollywood with a major superhero role (everyone had forgotten Dwayne Johnson, it seems), the man known in WWE as "Batista" proved all his doubters wrong and stole the show as the space-faring badass. However, for filmmaker James Gunn, casting him as Drax proved to be an uphill struggle with Marvel Studios.

In the Tweet below, Gunn responds to a fan and explains that he had to "fight" for the actor to star in Guardians of the Galaxy. Eventually, it seems Bautista not only managed to prove the critics wrong, but also some noteworthy studio executives.

Makes me wonder. Were they offering him chump change, or was Mamoa just too proud? I mean, it worked out either way for both of them, but still...

@KWilly - He wanted the lead role. Momoa didn't turn it down because of money, he was offered a similar paycheck for both roles. He ultimately chose Aquaman because he was guaranteed a lead role, while drax is just a buddy.

As a career move, being able to sell a giant movie as the lead just does more for your career rather than just being 1 outta 6.

@KWilly - Ike Perlmutter's reign is infamous for how cheap it was, with horror stories like Lays potato chips were the only catering at Iron Man 1's premiere and even when Bob Iger asked Perlmutter to move the Marvel staff to the Disney premises, Perlmutter insisted the employees bring their old, falling apart furniture from the old building rather than buy new stuff.

Not many people remember this, but Perlmutter refused to give the Avengers cast significant pay grades after the success of 1. The exception was RDJ, who was making millions and had already signed a deal for Avengers 2 and 3, but RDJ actually fought for them as Perlmutter considered either recasting the non-Iron Man roles or replacing them all with new characters.

The cast won in part due to RDJ, but Perlmutter didn't forget this and when Downey asked for a substantial paycheck for Civil War, Perlmutter told the Russos and Marcus/McFeely to write out Iron Man. As most know, this is when Kevin Feige went to Alan Horn and said "him or me" and Feige got to run Marvel Studios as a separate entity outside Marvel Entertainment. Suddenly, RDJ is not only doing Civil War but a Spider-Man film and Avengers 4 as well.

Glad he did. Bautista is probably the best wrestler-turned-actor currently working. Yes, even better than The Rock (by a mile, in fact).

No wonder Bautista defends that freak, no matter what he's tweeted. Like that crap about boys touching his silly place or parts or whatever.

Even if he was a bit too much of the comic relief after the first one, I really think Bautista deserved the chance more than Mamao or Boseman. He really seems to care about and be grateful of the character and all the people involved the most.

Great for him. I just wish that Drax hadn't devolved into an idiot only good for spewing middle school humor. At least He got better treatment than Mantis, though...

The thing that lacks the Guardián movies Is better action, espeacially in the second one where they don't have adult Groot.
