James Gunn Clarifies GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Darkhawk Rumors: "Look At The Packaging"

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set to expand the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it stands to reason that more spacefaring personalities would be introduced in the sequel. Director James Gunn already has a full list with Ego the Living Planet, Mantis, Ayesha, and Taserface, but thanks to a Marvel Legends figure list that did the rounds earlier this week, many fans speculated that there would be even more additions to the film, such as Darkhawk and Adam Warlock

In a Facebook Live chat, Gunn clarified that the characters' names were present in the list because they are under the banner of being Marvel Legends Figures, and that this was not a sure-fire indicator that they are in the film. “I think it was not very well thought out because I’m getting questions about. ‘Is Darkhawk in the movie because of the Marvel Legends figure? Is Adam Warlock in the movie because of the Marvel Legends figures?'” Gunn said. “All you need to do is look at the packaging, you guys. On the packaging cover, it says Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on the figures that are from the movie and it doesn’t say Vol. 2 on the other figures. So that should tell you what’s from the movie and what’s not.”

It's quite common for standard Marvel comics figures to be released alongside the film figures, and this was also not a flat-out denial of the aforementioned characters being in the film, but it led many fans to think it was, leading to another statement from the director on his Twitter page. "I didn't confirm anything other than some of the Marvel Legends figures - such as those ones - are not Vol. 2 figures."

While Darkhawk seemed like a random character, Adam Warlock didn't seem to be; given the character's role in the Infinity Gauntlet comic storyline and the fact that he and Vol. 2 villain Ayesha are both members of the Sovereign race, hope for his inclusion in the film is not too far-fetched. Did you want to see either character pop up in Vol. 2? Sound off below!

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
