GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Shares Shooting Update And Wider MCU Connections

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer and director James Gunn has revealed when shooting on the threequel begins, while also revealing whether he's had to tie into any other stories being told in the MCU.

James Gunn is currently doing the rounds to promote The Suicide Squad, but fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are anxious to see the filmmaker get to work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

During a recent interview with Collider, Gunn told the site that shooting starts in Georgia this November and confirmed that, yes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the movie's official title. Asked about the screenplay, he noted that "it's basically been finished for years," adding: "I’m in the middle of doing another draft now - but it’s really small stuff in comparison to what it has been."

Had Gunn not briefly parted ways with Disney and Marvel Studios, the threequel would have been released this year. The MCU is obviously always changing, so has that had an impact on his plans?

"The only time they ever [asked me to include something for future MCU movies] was on the first movie with Thanos, putting Thanos in there. Which they wanted me to do. But besides that they’ve never done that," the director explained. "I have to pay attention to things that happen, which they did talk to me about – the stuff with Gamora and things like that."

"I know that the characters have been through certain things, so I have to deal with that stuff. But for the most part, they never once asked me to put anything in the script for Volume 3 to set up anything in the future. Nor would I do it, frankly, it’s not really my thing."

That's good to hear, though we are excited to see how he deals with the team's time working with Thor, Rocket's stint on Earth as an Avenger, and the fact there's now another Gamora out there.

Well, assuming the TVA didn't prune her, of course!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to be released on May 23, 2023.
