Some possibly sad news in the world of comic book movies. It seems that Hellboy 3 seems unlikely to be made, not just in live action film, but even in the form of a comic or graphic novel. Click to check out this depressing news.

Ok now ,everybody knows here how much of a big Hellboy fan I am and how much I would love to see a third film. Writing this article gives me no joy at all so let's get too the point. Recently with all the press for Pacific Rim, there's been talks about Hellboy 3 due to the fact the director and star of the Hellboy series and the director and a star in Pacific Rim. Recently Guillermo del Toro did an interview with Collider in which he discussed Hellboy 3. Here is the video of what he said about Hellboy 3 and below are quotes from the video in case you're on a phone and can't watch it.

“It’s very unlikely it’ll happen because you need things to converge so strongly. [Producer] Larry Gordon, Universal, the rights, Ron [Perlman’s] and mine’s availability, [comic creator] Mike [Mingola’s] blessing; we have pieces of that, but we don’t have all of that. You need so many things to confluence and then you need about $150 million.”

When asked if he would do a Hellboy 3 in the form of comics or a graphic novel in a way how Dredd 2 is, del Toro had this to say:

“I talked to Mike about making it a comic and Mike said very clearly, ‘Hellboy the movies is yours, Hellboy the comics is mine; I don’t wanna confuse them.’ He has been very clear about not bringing any mythology we did in the movies into the comics, like Kroenen being a mechanical clockwork zombie Nazi, or The Samaritan, which is not called ‘The Samaritan’ in the comics, or Big Baby, or Abe Sapien being like the character he is in the movies, which is different. In the comics he’s a hard-ass, Abe Sapien is really a tough guy, and in the movie he’s like this sensitive, mind reading fish man. So [Mike] is very careful, no love story between Liz and Hellboy, so on and so forth."

del Toro finally said that he does have a story ready and prepared for Hellboy 3 and that it would be a completely different direction than the first 2 installments:

“The way Hellboy 1 and Hellboy 2 are very different from each other, Hellboy 3 is different enough from the other two that it wouldn’t feel like the same universe in scale. He does become the beast of the apocalypse. But seeing the apocalypse is getting more and more—the bar is raised higher and higher every year; mass destruction is becoming the sport of the summer.”

It is important to note that Mike Mingola has said he would love to do a Hellboy 3, Ron Perlman has said he wants to do a Hellboy 3 and currently the film rights to Hellboy are with Universal but Legendary Studio's President has said he is interested in a third Hellboy and one of the places Legendary Studios is looking to move into is Universal. It's possible but it's all really a matter of how great Pacific Rim is. At the end of the day, I still do have hope that this movie will be made and I do think it will because everybody wants to do it, it's all really a matter of getting everybody in the same room and agreeing to make it. What are your thoughts on this? I need a drink. Where you at cipher?

Can someone explain why the [frick] a third Hellboy can’t work because I have yet to see a valid [frick]ing reason why it can’t? I mean if its budget issues, that’s bullshit. WB’s is stupid enough to give Green Lantern a $200 million dollar budget. Disney is stupid enough to give Lone Ranger a $215-250 dollar budget and give John Carter a $250 dollar budget, why can’t Hellboy get a simple 120? I mean hell I understand that’s a lot and I’m sure Del Toro can cut it down but still it’s not like there’s never been a film that you’ve given a huge budget to that’s flopped.

In this day and age, comic book movies sell. In the past year, we’ve had 3 billion dollar comic book films. The Amazing Spider-Man made 750 million; Man of Steel is projected 700-800 million. In this day and age where people get hyped for Thor and Iron Man, why can’t you do the same for Hellboy. Ok sure Dredd was a flop financially but that’s because of multiple reasons. It’s a reboot, Dredd isn’t a well known character, and Liongate wouldn’t market the film. With Hellboy you have 2 previous installments in the series that were praised. I mean Hellboy 1 & 2 is on the level of Nolan’s first 2 Batman, Burton’s Batman, Raimi’s 2 Spider-Man, and Donner’s Superman. Well Hellboy isn’t as popular as Batman or Superman; he is still well known and marketable. If Marvel can put out a movie with a talking raccoon, don’t [frick]ing tell me Hellboy 3 can’t work because that’s bullshit.

So I guess the truly only way Del Toro can get Hellboy 3 is if Pacific Rim can win an Oscar. Hell if the Avengers, Snow White & The Huntsman, Prometheus, and The Hobbit can get nominated than so can Pacific Rim. I mean hell if the Transformers series can be nominated for a total of 7 Oscars, I’m sure Pacific Rim can get some. If Pacific Rim wins then yea, Hellboy 3 is happening due to the thing where if you win an Oscar you get to pick your next project and get financially backing for it. That’s how Hellboy 2 got made.

If Mark Miller can get all his indie comics crap into films, Hellboy 3 can get made.

Why is Hellboy 3 dependent on whether Pacific Rim is a success. Hellboy is a different story and universe all together. Just because Pacific Rim is a success or failure does not mean Hellboy will follow either of them. Hellboy 3 should rest upon Hellboy 2 or 3 and not a film that has nothing to do with its character.

I think the second is better than the first.. and I would like to see a 3rd

Because del Toro needs a hit. The reason Nolan, Cameron, Whedon now, and many other directors need a hit film so everyone to notice them. We all know Lucas from Star Wars, Nolan from Batman, Bay from Transformers, but Del Toro hasn't had huge success in the GA. The Hellboy films weren't really box office successes. He just needs one hit so people are like "he directed that film. that was awesome" that everybody saw.

Also Pacific Rim needs some Oscar noms.

Levi,
Are the Hellboy comics better than Del Toro's films?

And I actually liked the first Hellboy better than the second one but I'm just a casual fan.

Depends on which ones. Some were inspirited for the movies. I would say that if you love the films, you would love the comics. Neither is better there all just good.

I would say it depends on how you feel the artwork is.

Hellboy comics have their own look. If that stuff doesn't bother you then give it a try.

I'm assuming Someone at Universal slept with Mike Mignola's wife or something, because he really really REALLY doesn't want this film to get made. Annoying shit.

Even if Pacific Rim does well there is still no garuntee that Hellboy 3 will be made, as Del Toro has alot on his plate before he can even start it.

Sorry but no offensive, cipher's my drink guy.

Thanks my man.

Damn. Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Upset that Dallas didn't get Dwight Coward or something? My turn. First off I wasn't really comparing Hellboy to Spider-Man, Batman, Superman or Avengers. I was simply saying we are living in the Golden Age of superhero movies. Superhero movies sell. Why wouldn't you released a third Hellboy during a time where Hellboy's genre is in it's Golden Age?

I do agree about Hellboy's marketablity but come on if films like 300 and Kick-Ass can sell, Hellboy can. I'm sure parents would prefer the demon superhero saving and protecting mankind over the 11 year old girl saying [foo foo].

Ok so Cash is King right? Hellboy 2's budget was 85 million and made 160,388,063. GI Joe: Rise of Cobra's budget was 175 million and only made 302,469,017. Not when you look at how much both made considering their budget's, Hellboy 2 earned more back than GI Joe and yet GI Joe got a sequel.

Lastly, if Tranformers Dark of the Moon can be nominated for 3 Oscars, I'm sure Pacific Rim can get some nominations. Hellboy's budget was like 60 million and only made 90 million. Then del Toro dropped Pan's Labyrinth, which got 6 Oscar nominations and 3 victories and got del Toro to make Hellboy 2. Now Pacific Rim is no Pan's Labyrinth but it can get nominations.

Also taking shots at Nas?

Also send Hellboy to Fox?

Sending Hellboy to Fox is like letting Jacky write Justice League.

When Hellboy was produced, the atmosphere for Comic Book Movies was VERY different than it is now. You could get just about anything greenlit after X-Men and Spider-man were hits, as evidenced by all the movies being put out based on all sorts of comics. But then you get some Daredevils, Punishers, JOnah Hex, etc...and it starts to get more under control. They want to do Iron Man money, if not Avengers money.

So, the time to get Hellboy 3 produced was really a few years ago. Now you've got things like Green Lantern smacking studios in the face. Hellboy 3, I'm sure, seems like WAY too big a gamble at this point.

LEVITIKUZ

Lol at Uni. First off Perlman may be old but he has said he would do it. Second, lack of comic knowledge? I may not know every comic but stating I don't read or know then is stupid and foolish. Hit the gym? Can't disagree but I've been busy with class lately you run 5 miles a day.

Lastly with the deal with it. Yes maybe I should but at the end of the day, none of my favorite CBM characters get made yearly unlike most people on this site. With DC I do love Batman and Superman but DC has nothing going on now. With Marvel I love Spidey, Wolverine, Hulk, and Daredevil. I am excited for The Wolverine mostly because the Japan Saga is my favorite Wolverine story but other than that nothing. I'm not an Iron Man fan and only see that film because of RDJ. I'm not a fan of Thor. I do like Cap and am excited for Winter Solider. I don't give a shit about Ant-Man or GOTG. I have no faith in Webb's TASM2 or Singer's DOFP. Marvel may not do much with Daredevil but come on no Hulk film? Hell we've heard Ant-Man, BP, Strange and others for Phrase 3 but no Hulk.

The thing is none of my favorite characters are getting made. I love Hellboy and would love a third film. You fans would act the same way if Nolan never did TDKR or we never had an Iron Man 3.

The reason this news is bad is because not only could we not get a Hellboy 3 in film but we might not get it in any form. Even Dredd got a comic sequel.
