BOX OFFICE: Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA Likely To Open With $90 Million This Weekend
With a positive response from critics and a huge amount of interest from moviegoers thanks to a clever marketing campaign, Godzilla looks set to stomp its way through the North American box office this weekend with an incredible opening of around $90 million. Read on for details!
According to Variety, Godzilla looks set to earn around $90 million this weekend. That's based on early estimates for today as tracking indicates that it will kick off its North American run with a mighty $35 million. That includes the impressive $9.3 million from late showings on Thursday, and with an estimated $31+ million on Saturday and $22+ million on Sunday, there's a very strong chance that the Gareth Edwards helmed remake will break the $90 million barrier. In 1998, the version starring Matthew Broderick opened with only $44 million. This take on the classic monster is doing well overseas as well. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is expected to pass $700 million today, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is nearing $600 million.
Now, those of you who follow me on Twitter will know that I loved Godzilla, and I really can't recommend checking it out this weekend enough. If you go in expecting a brainless two hours slugfest between Godzilla and MUTO, you'll likely be disappointed, but Edwards brings the titular monster to life incredibly here and the final battle is well worth the wait. It's not perfect, but it IS one of 2014's best movies yet. Take notes Pacific Rim fans; THIS is how it's done!
