Paul Feig Confronts Sony Pictures About Not Including His 2016 GHOSTBUSTERS Film In Home-Media Collection Paul Feig Confronts Sony Pictures About Not Including His 2016 GHOSTBUSTERS Film In Home-Media Collection

2016's Ghostbusters was omitted from an upcoming Ghostbusters home-media bundle, and the director of the film, Paul Feig, has now taken to Twitter to call out Sony Pictures about it.

Ghostbusters returned to theaters earlier this year with Afterlife. Directed by Jason Reitman, the movie served as a direct continuation of Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel. It wasn't, however, the first attempt to bring the franchise to modern audiences. In 2016, Sony released Ghostbusters (also known as Ghostbusters: Answer the Call), directed by Paul Feig and starring Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon. Unfortunately, the film was heavily maligned prior to its release (mostly due to its all-female cast), and once it actually premiered, audiences didn't embrace it.

Despite decent reviews, Answer the Call was a financial dud (it earned $229 million worldwide on a reported $144 million budget) and turned into a sort of pariah in its franchise. The movie had mostly been forgotten as the years passed, but it's in the news once again due to a controversy surrounding an upcoming box set.

To accompany the home-media arrival of Ghostbusters: Afterlife in February, Sony will release Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection on 4K and Blu-ray, a set comprised of Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but not of Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. The film's absence in this upcoming release caught the attention of the movie's director, Paul Feig.

The Bridesmaids and Spy helmer took to Twitter to confront Sony Pictures about the omission, bringing up the movie's critical reception and the fact that original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson appeared in it:

In case you're unable to read the tweet, Feig wrote:

"Um... [Sony], I know this must be a mistake. We do have a lot of fans and [Bill Murray], [Dan Aykroyd] and [Ernie Hudson] were in it and it won the Kids Choice Award for Best Feature Film the year it came out. So, I guess this was just an oversight? #weareallghostbusters."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony "did not immediately respond to a request for comment" about the matter. When it comes to franchises as popular as Ghostbusters, matters like this one are usually handled in private, so it's surprising to see it spilling out onto social media.

Feig has, rightfully, been a staunch defender of Answer the Call, having faced a great deal of vitriol leading up to its release. Back in 2016, when criticism against the film was at an all-time high, Feig supported his cast while talking to USA Today:

“[You] get this microfraction of people that just have a problem with women, [It's] shocking that in 2016 that would even be an issue [...] I'm just trying to show off people with talent I know they have and give them the roles and let them shine. That's what you do with men [...] That's what you do with anyone that’s talented."

It's unclear whether Sony will end up including Ghostbusters: Answer the Call in the upcoming box set following this controversy. However, given the proximity of the collection's release, that's unlikely.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will arrive on home media on February 1st, 2022.

Considering how much the fact the movie went over a recorded budget and ignored the advice of Dan Aykroyd and other producers to film certain scenes which led to the film to go over budget, I can't blame Sony. Fans or not the film cost them more money and hurt Sony's filmmaking division.

Could it be because the original actors play different characters in feig’s, but play the same characters in afterlife? That would be a good reason, as the new one seems like a true direct sequel to the story and characters (note i havent seen it yet)

The only reason I own this movie is it was actually cheaper to get the 3 movie collection in iTunes than to get 1 and 2 separately.

@Ha1frican - I got it for free by signing up for Movies Anywhere. I have never even opened it to its main menu.

Not that I have any hate for it. It never interested me, the trailer didn’t convince me, and it’s reputation isn’t good. So why waste my little leisure time on that mess?

Local ass complains that no one wants the shit it created

Yeah it's messed up that they call it the "Ultimate Collection" and it doesn't include all of the movies, but at the same time... no one wants that pile of shit 🤷🏽‍♂️

Also they are clearly trying to have the single continuity in the collection, so why would they include the movie where the legacy actors are there playing completely different characters? 🤨

Paul Feig, 2016: “I’m making my own Ghostbusters movie that has nothing to do with the old movies! Those old characters don’t exist! But you know I’m gonna steal everything from those movies! I’m taking the car, the logo, the equipment, the theme song, and huge chunks of the story! I’m even gonna rip off Zuul! And whenever somebody complains about how they don’t like the decisions I’m making, and how they think I’m being disrespectful to the previous two films, I’m gonna call them a sexist troll who probably lives their mom’s basement! Muahahaha!”

Paul Feig, 2021: “Gee, gosh, Sony. You didn’t include my movie in your box set. That seems pretty rude. I feel (holds back tears) disrespected!”

It's not in the same Universe... It's not like it's including The Real Ghostbusters or Extreme Ghostbusters either, Paul.

Well the movie exists outside of the continuity, and I guess that's why it is not in it. Should've just called it the ultimate trilogy though to prevent this

Everyone, even the director, is trying to make this some kind of statement by the studio. It’s collecting the continuing story… that’s all. It’s not particularly controversial to not include a reboot that isn’t part of that story.

@Chewtoy - why isn't the batman included in the Burton batman collection? /s

It’s a shame that movie sucked so hard. Because the cast wasn’t the problem. Harold Ramis in those first two movies played it incredibly straight, and I think Kristen Wiig could have that off. But when they’re all the funny/loud one it doesn’t work so great.

But in Feig’s defence, even the mortal kombat box set includes Mortal Kombat Legacy

@TheMapleSyrup - Yeah, when I heard this was going to be made with that cast, I couldn't wait to watch it. Then when all the online clods started killing it just because it was a female cast, that pissed me off. Then I saw it...terrible film. Chris Hemsworth stole that movie out from underneath 3 of the funniest people around (and Leslie Jones). Feig can't accept that a dropped a cinematic turd on the movie going public.

TheHummus - 12/23/2021, 9:47 AM
Paul Feig needs to have that Joel Schumacher self-awareness. Like yeah you made the movie you wanted but it’s obvious not a whole lot of people appreciated it. He should also do what Joel and Clooney did and maybe apologize for doing it like they did for Batman and Robin haha

Ghostbusters afterlife being a sort of response to the 2016 reboot should teach Hollywood a lesson about representation in general.

B-b-but, it won a kid's choice award!

Remember, in the original movie when Ray gets a blowjob from a ghost?

I guess we are just going to ignore the fact that the movie was not in the same universe as the others, or also just going to ignore that it was a crap movie. Always has to make it about something other than your own failures.

Looks like a garbage director is crying for some more residuals. Sony is smart for burying the memory of this complete waste of a film.

It's because the movie was trash lmao.

p.s Remember after the movie bombed, it was revealed (not sure through the Sony hack or not) that another Ghostbuster movie was also being made that was supposed to have Chris Pratt & Channing Tatum as the leads that was supposed to apparently have a really good script and it was just like...why didn't you lead with that movie first?

Every time something fails there’s always someone crying foul. I love Wiig & McCarthy both but this movie didn’t work at all. Just a bad movie. It happens. Nobody ever bats .1000, Wish people would stop blaming failures on some sort of “ism”.

Does he know he’s just reminding everyone how bad that movie was?? I mean I would’ve never thought about that train wreck of a scooby doo movie again if I didn’t see this article. But now we are all reminded of the reboot nobody asked for or wanted.
