@L0RDbuckethead - Hopefully it's better and she doesn't throw any of the many female led horror movies under the bus the way she did Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman.
Either way im not watching it, I can respect a director for standing by their film, but while a lot of femenist film makers tend to ignore the successful female led films of the past when talking about recent failures or criticism, but she flat out pointed towards them and said they don't count.
Lost what little respect I had or her with that bullshit

@Chewtoy - I think Banks is generally right on her analysis. Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel have their foot in the door because of the genre they're a part of (maybe less-so the literal shared universe aspect, though that doesn't hurt).

Smarter folks than me are dissecting exactly what the nuances are that can drive women to buy movie tickets the way that adolescent boys do, but I do know that when I went to see Captain Marvel, I saw a father bring his 8-to-10 year old girl (wearing an glitter-covered unicorn hat) to see it, and she seemed to get all the feelings that I've seen the boys her age have when walking out of a Spider-Man movie.

There is absolutely a place for women in action roles, and outside the standard trichotomy of mother / virgin / vamp. But unlike a male audience/protagonists, where studios have spent 70 years fine-tuning their formula, there's a lot of kinks to work out with women (and soon LGBT heroes, which will be so much clumsier at first).

People can't invent entire new subgenres on demand. Whatever the distaff version of Mission Impossible is, we've just not quite hit on the formula yet, but that's what experimentation is for.
