While Godzilla may have hit theaters just around three years ago, it's Kong: Skull Island that will actually launch Legendary's MonsterVerse as its story takes place over forty years before the main events of the previous film.
The first clip has arrived, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, and it teases a tense confrontation between Samuel L. Jackson's character Lieutenant Colonel Packard and John Goodman's character Bill Randa, who works for an organization known as Monarch - as in the same organization that attempted to kill Godzilla with a nuclear bomb in 1954. That's not the only major reveal as he also name-drops M.U.T.O. (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) and lets Jackson know that it's up to his agency to find these creatures before they can reclaim the Earth for themselves.
On another note, we've received confirmation of a post-credits tag and according to Splash Report editor-in-chief Kellvin Chavez, it's extremely awesome and he even goes on to promise that "it will not disappoint." The former Latino-Review founder, who has seen the film, wouldn't divulge much else (as he is under an embargo), but did seem to indicate in his follow-up comments that he definitely enjoyed what he saw from the Jordan Vogt-Roberts directed feature.
As for that end credits sequence, if we were to speculate, there are a number of different directions they could go with it, with the most likely being a possible tease for 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Mothra, anyone?), but then again, they could also surprise us with a very early first look at 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong. What do you guys think?

Kong: Skull Island reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific—as beautiful as it is treacherous—unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.
