JOKER Reclaims Its Throne Atop The Weekend Box Office; Laughs Past $849.1 Million Worldwide

After losing the top spot last weekend to Disney's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Todd Phillips' Joker has reclaimed the box office crown with a stellar fourth weekend, and has now topped $849.1M worldwide!

Joker is the king of the box office yet again.

With an estimated $18.9 million weekend, the Todd Phillips-directed DC blockbuster, which stars 3x Academy Award-nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, has reclaimed the top spot at the domestic box office, narrowly edging out Disney's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil ($18.5M).

After this weekend, the film has earned over $849.1 million worldwide ($277.6M domestic; $571.5M foreign), which tops Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman ($821.8M), and it is soon expected to top $900 million, which will take it well past Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (873.6M). It's also looking increasingly likely that Joker will ultimately cross the $1 billion milestone before the end of its theatrical run.

As for the rest of the weekend box office, Disney's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil may be disappointing stateside, but the Angelina Jolie-starrer has fared considerably better overseas and, to date, has taken in $293.5 million globally ($65.4M domestic; $228.1M foreign). MGM's The Addams Family ($11.7M weekend; $84M global total), Sony's Zombieland: Double Tap ($11.6M weekend; $63.6M global total) and STXFilms' Countdown ($9M) rounded out the rest of the top five.

Meanwhile, Terminator: Dark Fate, which is being distributed by the Disney-owned 20th Century Fox internationally, got off to a strong start overseas, pulling in $12.8 million from ten foreign markets, including $3.9 million from the United Kingdom. The latest chapter in the franchise opens in North America and the rest of the world on November 1.

Here's the full weekend domestic box office numbers:

Forever alone in a crowd, Arthur Fleck seeks connection. Yet, as he trods the sooted Gotham City streets and rides the graffitied mass transit rails of a hostile town teeming with division and dissatisfaction, Arthur wears two masks. One, he paints on for his day job as a clown. The other he can never remove; it’s the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel he’s a part of the world around him, and not the misunderstood man whom life is repeatedly beating down. Fatherless, Arthur has a fragile mother, arguably his best friend, who nicknamed him Happy, a moniker that’s fostered in Arthur a smile that hides the heartache beneath. But, when bullied by teens on the streets, taunted by suits on the subway, or simply teased by his fellow clowns at work, this social outlier only becomes even more out of sync with everyone around him.
