DREDD Sequel Looks Unlikely Says Producer

Dredd producer Adi Shankar gives an update on the chances of a sequel to the 2012 sci-fi movie based on the 2000AD character. After star Karl Urban's comments, can we expect anything any time soon?

After Karl Urban's comments a couple of weeks ago, Dredd producer Adi Shankar has weighed in on whether or not we can expaect a sequel.

"I'm going to tread lightly here", he told Dweebcast. "I feel like Karl made a small statement and it got blown way out of proportion by news sites. Yeah, there are conversations going on", but perhaps decisively, "there's no f*cking script".

Shankar expalins that he is "leading the charge" in attempts to get a sequel to the 2012 film made. But he does go on to describe some of the difficulties the production is facing; "The movie, it wasn't a studio movie, it was an independent movie. That changes the dynamic immensely, because every country has a different distributor who bought the movie, Every one of those distributors has to sign off".

So where does this leave the Dredd sequel? "Big question mark. Dredd has built an audience over time", he said, adding that "I'm a fan... I'm not like a douchebag in a suit who thought they could make a lot of money doing this. If anything, the movie business is in a state of decline, not an upswing"

Whist the chances of a movie sequel may be looking slim right now, Shankar did add that there are other possiblitlites, "The Mega City One universe, the 2000AD universe, it's so rich and so deep. Yes. I would obviously love to see a Dredd 2, or a Dredd TV series. There are so many avenues to go with this".

Following the original's disappointing return at the box office, could taking the property to television be a good idea?
