We recently learned that some fans of Zack Snyder's DCEU work have banded together for a motion comic Justice League sequel, but there's been quite a bit of backlash due to them tracing the work of others.

We recently learned that a group of "SnyderVerse" fans are developing "The Dreamscapes of Justice League: A Motion Comic," which will be an adaptation of Zack Snyder's Justice League sequels.

Based on leaked storyboards detailing the filmmaker's plan for the DC Extended Universe, Darkseid actor Ray Porter will provide a voiceover for the project, while Martian Manhunter himself, Harry Lennix, has also been enlisted. The trailer has already been made private on YouTube (perhaps due to copyright issues) and there's now another issue for the project.

As you can see below, the artists working on the upcoming motion comic have been accused of tracing the work of various DC Comics artists, something that's akin to plagiarism in the industry.

This is a charitable project - with the aim being to raise awareness for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - but it's unclear how the artists whose work is being redrawn feel about this. Given how controversial tracing has become, chances are they wouldn't be best pleased.

The team working on "The Dreamscapes of Justice League: A Motion Comic" have issued the following statement responding to these accusations, claiming just some of the art used in the project is "inspired" by the work of artists like Jim Lee, Jason Fabok, and Ivan Reis.

If its a motion comic, shouldn't it look like the comic it's adapting.

@marvel72 - Maybe. If the motion comic is adapting an already existing series, then yeah.

But this isn't adapting anything. There is no existing Snyderverse comic for this. From what I understand they are using story boards from Snyder's notes to create something new.

Oh boy....not a great way to start this project off haha.

This isn't just "inspired" work. They straight up stole the art for these pictures then made very miniscule changes to the colors or details, like facial expressions.

Have these people not been comic fans for very long? If they have been then they would know many examples where artists have been accuses of copying other people's art and using it in their own comics. It never goes well and is heavily frowned upon.

And this excuse is just pathetic:

"Most of the drawings you'll see on this project will 100% be newly created original art"

So he starts off by saying some of their art was "inspired" by other artists. He doesn't say they copied it. But then he goes on to say that MOST of the art will be "100% newly created art."

So if he's not willing to admit that these drawings are copied, then would,t that mean that ALL of the art is new? Not just MOST of the art?

INSPIRATION and COPYING are two different things. Being inspired is fine. Everyone pulls inspiration from somewhere, to some degree when creating new art. COPYING is a whole different animal.

Imagine thinking it's a good idea to make the first artwork shown for this fan project being stolen art from highly popular books and artists lol. Good lord...this makes these guys seem really ignorant.

Like I've said before, this is sad even by Sndyer Cult standards.

These schmucks should go live in a cave or something.

Sooner or later, this project had to be accused of some form of plagiarism or copyrights infringements. And I guess here it is already.

Keep in mind that this is not an official Snyderverse project and Zack Snyder isn't even involved. It's a bunch of fans interpreting Zack Snyder's rough outline for Justice League 2 into a full motion comic series.

They might have snagged some of the actors from the Snyder Cut, but don't confuse this as "official" in the sense that it's made or produced by Snyder himself.

It's been cancelled. Honestly I've got mixed feelings - on the one hand, it was a fan project, wasn't for profit and any funds raised would've gone to charity. By that very nature, I kinda feel like they should get the benefit of the doubt for things like tracing (perhaps with the proviso that they credit the original artists) - because they're not actually personally "benefiting" from other people's work.

Having said that (as much as I liked Man of Steel and BvS, and thought the Snyder Cut was a vast improvement over Josstice League) the outline for parts two and three sounded awful, with the whole subplot surrounding Bruce and Lois' romance and their child being particularly bad (and the Snyder Cut even hints that that plot thread had been dropped, seeing as it's hinted throughout that Lois is in the early stages of pregnancy with Clark's child). I can't imagine it being any better as a fan-made motion comic - but then I guess I'm not the audience for it, and I sympathise with them not being able to see it through for no other reason than the fact they were trying to do it for charity.

@AC1 - Even if they weren't going to get personal material gain from the project, they were still getting attention and exposure (yeah yeah, I know that "paying with exposure" is an old joke in art-circles) with it and using other's people's art, without compensation or consent, even for just that is pretty scummy.

@FinnishDude - yeah I definitely don't agree with their conduct, I just don't think they did it intentionally or maliciously, seems more like they just didn't know any better and were in over their heads and that between that and the charitable focus maybe they deserved the benefit of the doubt to a degree (at least, more than if they were doing it for profit or personal gain)

@AC1 - If they dealt with the blowback in more humble way, I might agree (or at least meet you halfway), but considering how arrogant they have been about this whole thing, I can't really spare any sympathy for them.

@FinnishDude - "using other's people's art, without compensation or consent"

So does basically every fanfilm on Youtube. Is it a problem? Not really.

@Nightwing1015 - Fan films usually film their own stuff, not just take all the clips from pre-existing work.

@FinnishDude - The clips, no. But the music, fonts, some visuals, yeah they totally do!
