We've caught a glimpse of the new-look Steppenwolf in the trailer(s) for Zack Snyder's Justice League, but the filmmaker has now taken to Vero to share the first official image of the villain.
He certainly looks a lot different to the version in Joss Whedon's 2017 cut of Justice League, and is quite a bit more detailed (and definitely less cartoonish). How much of an improvement this redesign/original design of Steppenwolf actually turns out to be will likely depend on personal preference, but he looks like a vastly more formidable opponent for the League here.
Why the decision was made not to go with this version of the Justice League villain when the movie was first released in theaters is hard to say, but chances are this one was a lot more complicated, and expensive, to create. With it likely that many of the villain's scenes were also reshot, it's no wonder that we ended up with a simplified take on Steppenwolf three years ago.
One thing both versions will have in common, however, is that they're voiced by actor Ciaran Hinds. There's no word on whether he was part of Snyder's reshoots or if he'd already recorded the necessary dialogue before Whedon ended up taking over the project.
