MEN IN BLACK Spinoff Set For A 2019 Release With A Script From The Writers Of IRON MAN

Deadline has learned that Sony Pictures are in the midst of fast-tracking a Men in Black spinoff film and have already dated the film for a May 17, 2019 release date.

Neither Will Smith nor Tommy Lee Jones is expected to return to reprise their fan-favorite roles as Agent J and Agent K, respectively, but the new film will continue to build onto the world they created and will acknowledge events from the first three installments, similarly to Universal's highly-successful Jurassic World.

The screenwriting duo of Matt Holloway & Art Marcum, whose past credits include Iron Man, Punisher: War Zone, and most recently, Transformers: The Last Knight, has been tapped to pen the screenplay. Their script is said to be a contemporary take on the alien-fighting secret agency and will shift the focus to new characters that are fighting villains on a more global scale than the original trilogy.

Water F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing while the legendary Steven Spielberg will serve as an executive producer. The search for a director is currently ongoing, but the report adds that the studio doesn't expect the search to go on for much longer.

On a related note, the rumored Men in Black/21 Jump Street crossover with Channing Tatum & Jonah Hill is reportedly still in some early stage of development, but this new project will take priority. When announcing the new film, Parkes said, "It’s so rare to get to the end of the script and know you’re holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place."
