THE MUMMY Reboot In The Works; Jon Spaihts To Write The Script

Spaihts, who has previously worked on The Darkest Hour and the upcoming Prometheus, has been hired by Universal Pictures to pen a reboot of their adventure franchise The Mummy.

Variety is reporting that Jon Spaihts - who has previously worked on the science fiction films Prometheus and The Darkest Hour - has been tapped by Universal Pictures to reboot their film franchise The Mummy. The series, which starred Brendan Fraser, has consisted of three films (and two spin-offs) and spawned an animated series, video games and comic books. The last film in the franchise, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, took in $401 million worldwide, indicating that Universal is still interested in the franchise. Jeffrey Kirschenbaum is overseeing the project for Universal, while Sean Daniel (who produced the other films) is returning as producer.

In addition, Spaihts talks about the scale he wants to open the reboot up to, comparing it to Prometheus. "I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus: to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before."

Do you think a reboot of The Mummy series is a good idea?
