5 Awesome MILLARWORLD Adaptations Most Likely To Debut On Netflix

It was revealed yesterday that Netflix has acquired Mark Millar's "Millarworld" and that they'll be bringing his work to the online streaming service. Here are the five adaptation we think are on the way!

In news which came completely out of the blue, it was revealed yesterday that Netflix had bought Mark Millar's self-owned publishing house Millarworld. While it's not quite up there with Disney purchasing Marvel, it's still a big deal and an unprecedented move for an online streaming service.

Many of Millar's comics have been in various states of production for years but it was the poor critical and commercial response to Kick-Ass 2 which seemed to bring many of them to a halt. It also didn't help that many of the movies would be R-Rated and that it wasn't until the release of Deadpool last year that studios realised that comic book adaptations don't always have to be of the PG-13 variety.

Now that Netflix holds the rights to all but Kick-Ass and Kingsman, you'd best believe Millar's work is about to make a huge splash. Here, we take a look at the five projects we believe are up first for them.

5. Nemesis

What if Batman was The Joker? That's what Mark Millar and Steve McNiven set out to explore in Nemesis, and they did a splendid job. With all the resources of the Caped Crusader, Nemesis specialises in creating chaos and mass murder simply because he is rich and bored. It's not long until he faces off against super cop Blake Morrow, and what follows is bloody action, twists and turns, and huge action set pieces. This is a comic book property which desperately needs to become a movie but it could work just as well across thirteen episodes.

The late Tony Scott was attached to this for a time, with Joe Carnahan the latest to take a crack at the screenplay. Since then, it's pretty much been stuck in development hell and when and if it will ever happen remains to be seen as it's been a while since we've heard anything solid. Netflix could do a great job with the property, though, and seeing as Millar was at one time planning a sequel in comic book form, it's a property which has the potential to last over multiple seasons.

Like almost all of Mark Millar's work, Supercrooks is a unique story which you can't help but wonder why no else had thought of before. A washed up team of villains (and one superhero, who has been blackmailed into joining them) assemble to pull off a daring heist on "The Bastard", a terrifying baddie who these guys are foolish to try and rip off. That doesn't stop them trying though, and this short series was packed full of great character moments, not to mention a lot of fun twists and turns.

Nacho Vigalando has been attached to direct before the first issue of the comic was released, and Leinil Yu's artwork shows to some extent exactly who they have in mind for some key roles. Unfortunately, we've heard nothing about this one for some time so it now heading to Netflix seems highly likely. Given the premise, Supercrooks would probably work best as a movie but there are ways the story could be stretched out to make it an episodic drama along the lines of Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

3. Superior

Superior tells the story of Simon Pooni, a 12-year-old boy who suffers from multiple sclerosis. When an alien monkey appears at his bedside, the youngster is granted one wish and chooses the ability to transform into his comic book and big screen idol "Superior". It's a great premise (despite its similarities to DC Comics' Shazam) and is a sweet and enjoyable read.

However, there's a MASSIVE twist a little later on in the series (seriously, you wouldn't guess what it is in a million years) and an action-packed finale which Leinil Yu's artwork proves would look glorious on the big screen. Kingsman: The Golden Circle director Matthew Vaughn reportedly has the rights to this one, and may want to start developing it soon for Netflix in order to avoid any comparisons to Shazam, a movie which is now picking up speed at Warner Bros. and New Line.

2. MPH

MPH tells the story of a small time Detroit crook with big dreams of going straight and living the good life. However, when he's exposed to a strange drug after being wrongly imprisoned, Roscoe is granted superspeed for short bursts of time after popping the pills. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has optioned the rights to this one but we've heard nothing since. The Flash has proved you can do superspeed on a small screen budget and this would work really well as an ongoing series.

Whatever form it takes, here's hoping the planned movie takes many of the unique visual cues from Duncan Fegredo's incredible artwork as this stands a chance of looking really very different. While it starts off with the lead and his friends using their abilities to create their dream lives, things ultimately take a Robin Hood-like turn and the presence of shady government agents and time travel definitely points to MPH having the potential to be great.

1. Starlight

Imagine if you found yourself transported to a far away planet, saved it, but returned home only to find that no one believes you? That's the problem faced by Duke McQueen, but decades later, the unappreciated family man once again finds himself drafted into action on the alien world. As an old man, how can he now hope to be the hero he once was? This is a fun adventure tale very much along the lines of Flash Gordon or John Carter, and a lot different to much of Mark Millar's darker work.

Beautifully illustrated by Goran Parlov, it's no surprise that the movie rights have already been picked up but it's another adaptation we've not heard much about lately. X-Men: Dark Phoenix's Simon Kinberg is producing, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story writer Gary Whitta attached to write. The comic book series felt a tad rushed so it would be nice to see Starlight given the chance to breathe over the course of a thirteen part series.

Superior was the only one I know. I'm not a fan of Millar, personally, but I wouldn't be opposed to a live-action version of it.

Okay I want a animated movie for Starlight and Superior, a mini-series for Super Crooks, a movie for Nemesis, a series for Huck, an adult animated series for Jupiter's Legacy (encompassing past and present), Wanted animated flick based directly on comic, and finally a Chosen series.

@Dedpool - I'm curious if they can even get away with doing a straight version of Wanted. Even as satire, the characters are such close copies of DC villains. I think DC's lawyers would roast them if they didn't get some legal permissions up front.

I'm pretty sure that the first series is going to be AMERICAN JESUS since Peter Gross also posted about the deal on his Facebook page and talks about it being part of the deal. And SUPERIOR was ripped off right off from MADOKA.

Jupiters legacy and super crooks. Hands down. Read everything he's done. He's a genius but should concentrate on writing comics and getting them out on time
