The first trailer for Disney-Pixar's Luca is now online, and it promises another delightful animated adventure from the creative team behind Coco.

The teaser introduces two friends enjoying their holiday in Italy. As they run around getting into trouble and evading the grouchy locals, they end up falling into the ocean, and it's then revealed that... they're actually part fish?

We have no idea why the lads sprout gills when they hit water, but such a bizarre premise should make for a fun watch. The official synopsis suggests that only Luca's pal is a "sea monster," so there's clearly a lot more to be revealed.

“Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface.”

"This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca,” said director Enrico Casarosa said in an official statement. “So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca.”

Check out the trailer below along with yesterday's poster and the voice-cast, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments section. Luca is currently scheduled for theatrical release on June 18th.

Luca features Jacob Tremblay (Room, Wonder) as Luca Paguro, a bright and inventive 13-year-old sea monster with endless curiosity -- especially when it comes to the mysterious world above the sea; Jack Dylan Grazer (We Are Who We Are, Shazam) as Alberto Scorfano, an independent, free-spirited teenage sea monster with unbridled enthusiasm for the human world; Emma Berman as Giulia, an outgoing and charming adventurer who befriends Luca and Alberto; Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids, Saturday Night Live, Big Mouth) as Daniela, Luca's mother; Marco Barricelli as Massimo, Giulia's father; and Jim Gaffigan (The Pale Tourist, Troop Zero) as Lorenzo, Luca's father.

Looks cool. I'd love to see a Monsters Inc reference in here somehow, lol. Animation looks softer than usual Pixar stuff too, like almost clay-mation style.

This is weird but I just watched a 2014 film called “Spring” which is basically a horror movie of the exact same plot as this and even taking place in Italy. Almost makes me wonder if Disney based it off it some how lol

@TheFireForce - Disney does get ideas and rip off other movies here’s proof of it sadly Japan couldn’t win this law suit against Disney

@TheFireForce - I thought the same thing while watching! Saw Spring years ago but there are a LOT of similarities.

@RorMachine - I bet Disney can rip H.P Lovecraft story and turn it all magically kid friendly. Now that's talent.

@Matador - Disney's been doing that their whole life. Cinderella, Snow white, Pocahontas, Tarzan, Aladdin, etc. are kid friendly versions of darker stories. They are the american dream when you can take other people's things, make it your own, and make money off it.

@Matador - I mean, Cinderella ends with doves pecking out the stepsisters' eyes.

@Reeds2Much - Didn't they also chop off some feet to fit the shoe?

@Matador - Yeah, one version has the prince put iron shoes on the stepmother (because she maimed her real daughters' feet to try to get them to fit the slipper) and heats them so she dances till she dies.

Truly heartwarming children's bedtime stories.

@RorMachine - it’s pretty crazy how they can even borrow from Lovecraft’s themes.

Did you like the movie? I loved it and accidentally stumbled across another movie from the director called the endless on Netflix and that was a really good trippy kind of movie. The dude has a knack for making odd “horror” movies
