MORTAL KOMBAT: Check Out The Brutal First Seven Minutes Of The Video Game Reboot

MORTAL KOMBAT: Check Out The Brutal First Seven Minutes Of The Video Game Reboot

Ahead of Mortal Kombat's theatrical/streaming debut this Friday, Warner Bros. has released the seven-minute opening sequence, which features a clash between the men that will become Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Mortal Kombat is set for release this Friday, and the bloody opening sequence is now online.

The 7-minute prologue takes place in ancient Japan, as Hanzo Hasashi's (Hiroyuki Sanada) finds his family massacred by Bi-han (Joe Taslim) and his fellow Lin Kuei ninjas. Hashasi takes out several enemies with his signature weapon before confronting his nemesis, promising to finish him where he stands.

Of course, these two warriors will eventually cross paths again as Scorpion and Sub-Zero, but the rest of this scene also sets up another intriguing plot thread. What we don't see here is Hashashi's infant daughter being rescued by Raiden, and it's heavily implied that Lewis Tan's Cole Young will ultimately be revealed as Scorpion's descendant.

Check out the clip below, and let us know if you plan on watching Mortal Kombat in theaters or on HBO Max this weekend.

In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark.
Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

Mortal Kombat is set for a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max on April 23.
