Vanity Fair has been investigating the fabled "Butthole Cut" of Cats as the #ReleaseTheButtholeCut gathers momentum, but what did Universal have to say when asked for comment? You might be surprised!

Yesterday, we told you about a strange new Cats rumor which claimed that a "Butthole Cut" of Cats exists somewhere in the depths of Universal Pictures.

Since then, the claims have gone viral, and Vanity Fair has decided to do some digging. They asked the person who first shared these bold claims for more intel and learned that he first heard of this alternate version of the poorly received musical around New Year's. However, his anonymous VFX source has provided online personality Ben Mekler with a few extra details:

From there, Vanity Fair reached out to Universal for comment, and a spokesperson for the film studio behind Cats started by saying the query was their "favorite email of ALL TIME" before adding that they can't possibly say anything about the #ReleaseTheButtholeCut uprising. "Hopefully that will add to the magic and mythical nature of the cinematic treasure," they added.

A spokesperson for Mill Film, the VFX company behind Cats, also refused to comment due to NDAs.

That's probably not the answer you were hoping for, but in many ways, it just makes this already legendary alternate version of Cats even more highly sought after and mysterious!

Why was this made? Who thought this was a good idea?

@BlackBeltJones - One of the longest-running, most famous, most popular Broadway musicals of all time? On paper it seems like a good enough idea to give it a shot.

I think what makes it seem like such a spectacular failure is the weird design decisions and the all-star cast. If this was a more modest production (especially an animated one), nobody would even be talking about it as a failure. It might have even been a modest success.

@Spock0Clock - animated or practical might’ve worked better

@Spock0Clock - you’re right about the animation aspect. People tolerate more in that medium vs. live action

Me, seeing the negative reaction to this movie, midway through writing a spec-script about tap dancing lizards trying to rise to the top of a competitive late-night talent circuit organized by the animals in a pet shop.

I guess the world just isn't ready for anthropomorphic musicals, but I swear to you all that "As the Scales Fall from My Eyes" by Lady Gaga as an albino python would have been a certified banger.

@Spock0Clock - Hey, if you commit to full anthro character, and not the weird human face on animal body like this film then your idea should be fine.
