Red 2 is a sequel to the 2010 film, Red, which was inspired by the DC Comics (parent of the now defunct Homage) limited series from Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer. Director Robert Schwentke did not return for the sequel which is directed by Dean Parisot, best known for Galaxy Quest. Work on the sequel officially began in January 2011 when Summit rehired Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber to begin work on the script. Filming began in September 2012 in Montreal. Other filming locations included London and Paris. In March, the film's release date was slightly changed moving up from its original August 2, 2013 date to July 19, 2013.
