The first reactions for Alex Garland's Annihilation, have been exceedingly positive with critics describing it as "beautiful and wickedly disturbing," "one hell of a mindf**k," "visually dazzling," "beautifully done, riveting and smart," and "absolutely phenomenal."

With the movie due out in theaters at the end of the month, Paramount Pictures has released twenty-one new hi-res promotional photos from Garland's upcoming sophomore effort and they're quite interesting to say the least as we see our star cast, consisting of Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac, exploring the mysterious Shimmer.

Oscar Issac plays Lena's husband, Kane, who suddenly reappears after a harrowing experience in The Shimmer. His grievous injury is what motivates Lena and the group to embark on their own journey into the belly of the beast.

The group of soldiers consist of Tuva Novotny as Cass Sheppard, Gina Rodriguez as Anya Thorensen, Tessa Thompson as Josie Radek, and Natalie Portman as Lena.

Academy Award-winner Natalie Portman headlines the all-star cast as Lena, a biologist who volunteers for the expedition in order to find a cure for her husband Kane (Oscar Issac).

The Hateful Eight star Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Dr. Ventress, the leader of the expedition.

The group shares a quiet moment, but it's likely just the calm before the storm.

Lena (Natalie Portman) and Kane (Oscar Isaac) parting ways? or reuniting? It's uncertain whether this scene takes place before Kane goes on his expedition or before Lena goes on hers.

Lena, a biologist and former soldier, joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X - a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscape and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity.

Glad it's getting good buzz, the trailers did not do it for me. Hope they make the sequel, but I'm not holding my breath.

I liked the trailers. It had a mysterious sci-fi pokemon vibe. I am really looking forward to this film. Hopefully it does not suck.

Rumor has it that the 1st screening of the film was "too artistic" and "smart" for the average movie-goer. Director and exec producer refused to reshoot the film to make it more "Action-centric" and "linear" so Paramount sold it to reduce risk.

Looking forward to checking this out on Netflix. If this is as visually stunning as the book is descriptive then bravo to Alex and crew! Never would have picked Natalie for the lead but she’s pretty good with the right direction and script.
