Anthony Mackie, who is best known around these parts as Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to star in a new sci-fi original film from Netflix, titled IO. The title itself is a nod to the film's premise which has seen humanity flee Earth after a cataclysmic event rendered it inhospitable and head to a distant colony on Jupiter's moon.

Specifically, IO centers on a young scientist named Sam, played by Margaret Qualley, as she stays behind in hopes of finding a way for humans to adapt and survive on Earth, rather than leave. However, when Micah (Anthony Mackie) arrives, the two survivors decide to catch the final shuttle scheduled to leave the planet. Of course, getting to the launch site will prove to be no easy task.

Sam, one of the last survivors on a post-cataclysmic Earth, is a young scientist dedicated to finding a way for humans to adapt and survive, rather than abandon their world. But with the final shuttle scheduled to leave the planet for a distant colony, her determination to stay is rocked by the arrival of another survivor, Micah. She must decide whether to journey with him to join the rest of humanity and begin life anew, or stay to fight for Earth’s survival. IO stars Margaret Qualley, Anthony Mackie, and Danny Huston and premieres January 18, 2019 only on Netflix.

IO will premiere on Netflix on January 18, 2019. You'll also be able to catch Anthony Mackie in the popular Netflix sci-fi show Altered Carbon, as he's set to join the cast as a lead star. And, of course, we're all waiting for the release of Avengers: Endgame in April to find out what will become of Falcon after the events of Infinity War.
