BOX OFFICE: BLADE RUNNER 2049 Kicks Off North American Run With Impressive $4 Million On Thursday

Blade Runner 2049 opened in North America theaters last night and the news is definitely good for the sequel which was over 30 years in the making! Hit the jump for the latest as its box office run begins.

Blade Runner 2049 shot into theaters in North America last night and made $4 million in the process. $800,000 of that came from IMAX screens and box office tracking currently points to it making between $45 million and $50 million this weekend. That's similar to Mad Max: Fury Road, a movie which debuted in 2015 with $45 million and went on to make a solid $154 million domestically.

It's also worth noting that Blade Runner 2049's preview number is a good 60% ahead of The Martian so the signs are all pointing to the sequel doing well in the long run, especially with good word of mouth.

Blade Runner 2049 cost $150 million to make and it's too soon to say how well it will do overseas as it's only opening in around 60% of countries over the next few days. Ticket sales remain strong, though, and it will be exciting to see if a sequel could happen somewhere down the line. If it does, Denis Denis Villeneuve will hopefully be at the helm because he exceeded expectations in every way here.

This movie is an experience, I'm tempted to say it broke new ground on some levels;

However, I don't think it will be a hit with general audiences for the same reason the original wasn't. A lot of people are just not prepared for this.

@Desrow - It begins? I'm still looking forward to seeing it but I feel like they've been promoting this movie for four years.
