UPDATE: EDGE OF TOMORROW Sequel Hires Two New Screenwriters

Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow sequel has hired two new screenwriters to hammer out the details of the script. With such a modest box office haul, are you surprised WB is moving forward with a sequel?

The 2014 critically-acclaimed sci-fi hit, Edge of Tomorrow (also known as All You Need is Kill and Live. Die. Repeat.) just hired two new screenwriters to develop ideas for the sequel. Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, who co-wrote the Jesse Owens biopic, Race, will write the follow-up,which has Christopher McQuarrie replacing Doug Liman as director. McQuarrie co-wrote the script of the first film.

The film grossed $370.5 million worldwide from an estimated production budget of $178 million. The combination of Cruise's involvement, favorable scores from critics and strong home media sales likely contribute to WB's decision to move forward with a sequel. McQuarrie has also indicated that a sequel will recieve a very strong, methodical marketing campaign, something the original lacked.

UPDATE: It would appear that Doug Liman will be returning to the sequel after all. Christopher McQuarrie has provided a correction to Deadline's story.

Correction: I am NOT directing The sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. Doug Liman is. I will be involved but there's no Edge without Doug.

I really wonder whats up with this sequel / prequel??? I loved the first one... Best Cruise movie in a while, this and Jack Reacher. MI movies have been ok but running out of ideas.

@Shanksman - Except the whole part where Marvel movies come in a variety of styles... Not one is the same. Love how people call it a Marvel formula. You mean the same damn super hero origin template all studios use in similar but different ways? Well even that doesn't apply to MCU movies. MI is the same shit wrapped in a different package. MI1 and MI3 were the best of the franchise and the rest just feel like the same boring things. the past 2 MI movies were ok but nothing special.

A film that surprised me by how good it was, as I liked the trailers and thought the film wouldn't be that good.

Dont think it needs a sequel.

do it right. no time travel. just a straight up war movie about a alien invasion. at the end she gets her abilities. anything else would be the same exact movie and we already know how it ends.

Edge of Tomorrow worked because it was a unique premise - live, die, repeat. We're used to this now. The sequel needs to use this in a totally creative new way that will wow the audience (without over writing the rules of time travel set up in the first film) otherwise not use it at all and focus on another aspect of the war to build a wider universe out of it.
